p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Fuji 23 1.4 or keep the X100?

Wondering if there are many on the board who currently own the X100 or X100s and are now thinking of moving to a X body with the 23 1.4. I have an X100 as well as the XE-1 and the 35 1.4 plus the Fuji 14mm. I'm thinking about having a XE-1 + 14mm + 23mm + 56 mm (when it comes out). As a result I'm considering selling the X100 to raise some funds. Anyone else in the same boat?

Hi Jack,

I'm just about to move from the X100 to X100s. I also have an X-Pro 1 with all of the Fuji prime lenses currently available. The XF 14/2.8, 27/2.8, 35/1.4, and 60/2 are all fantastic. The XF 14/2.8 on X-Pro 1 is better than a really good Oly 21/3.5 on my 6D. The XF 18/2 is excellent in the centre, but not so good at the edges and corners. The XF 55-200 OIS is OK, but not nearly as good as my EF 70-200/4L IS. I've decided to stick with Canon for longer lenses, and now I shoot X-Pro 1, X100, and 6D together, for intimate events and ceremonies.

I probably will buy the XF 56/1.2 (to see how it compares with my EF 85/1.2L II), but I probably won't buy the XF 23/1.4 - at least, not for now.

Jim

Hi Jack, I also have the x100s and an xpro1 with 14, 18, 35 and 55-200
About the 23, I'll probably give it a miss, too much overlapping and the size is off putting. But I want to see photos and tests before I make up my mind, from what I hear it's meant to be a similar design with the 14 and as good in terms of distortions and sharpness. I find that hard to believe but if it's true it will be a cracker of a lens. For now all I see is a big lens with a ridiculous hood, so I might save the budget for sth more meaningful like the 56 or 60
or some lights

i've thought about selling my x100s for the 23 1.4 but I've decided to keep it for a couple of reasons:
-the x100s is my main camera, I only use the X-Pro1 for the 14mm, 35mm and 55-200mm
-it is nice to have a 2nd body in case one fails
-you never have to worry about sensor dust on the x100s
-x100s and X-Pro1 w/ 56mm will be my portrait combo
-x100s is smaller than XE or X-Pro1 with the 23 1.4

Having had both the X100/X100s and also the XPro and XE-1, they are really pretty different cameras and simply putting a 23mm on the XE-1 for example does not equate to a X100s.

The size/handling difference for one will be pretty pronounced as the 23mm looks rather large (relatively speaking) and certainly isn't going to slip into a jacket pocket like the X100 can with its tiny 23/2 that is half built into the camera body

Likewise you'd be giving up the super fast flash sync of the leaf shutter, the OVF, the near silent shooting, the ND filter. Just kind of everything that makes shooting with the X100s such a unique experience.

Not that shooting with the XE-1 would be bad, its a nice camera, but simply having a 35mm focal length in common still leaves a bit of difference.

I guess it comes down to if you enjoy the X100s for its given attributes, or if its merely a means to have a focal length option you currently don't have on your XE-1 right now.

I am going to have both soon. I ordered the 23mm for the Xpro-1 kit. And recently bought the X100s mainly for it's leaf shutter attributes. And to have that extra body for events I shoot.

Thanks for the feedback and some good points. I need to figure out if it's the 35mm focal length or the X100 body and attributes that is more important to me.

I'd rather have 2 bodies instead of swapping lenses.

+1

I've been using X-Pro 1 + 14/2.8, X100, and 6D + 70-200/2.8L IS II for intimate events, recently. Great combo!

+1. I have the X100 and the X-E1 with 35, 18-55 and Rokinon 8mm. I will eventually add the 56 or 60 and, funds permitting, the 14. But not the 23 even though that's my "home" FOV. And the reason is the X100. Other that the benefits already listed, I have also fallen in love with the 23/2 lens and the way it draws. I tend to pay more attention to the overall image characteristics from a lens than measurable qualities such as sharpness or corner/edge performance. And the lens on the X100 just gives me a look I like and cannot get from any other gear I've used.

I will be adding an X100s before I get the 23/1.4, for alternating with the X100 for a different look or when really high ISO is needed.

Howdy gang,

I had some time with the XF 23mm f/1.4 and wrote a quick review about it on my blog if you're inclined.

the 23 looks great but the size is getting up there

I'm driving my x100 into the ground. can't part with the wonderful leaf shutter and the size.

would still like the 23 though. if only for fondling purposes

Personally, if size and speed compared to the X-E1 were my consideration then I'd rather have an X-A1 or X-M1 with the 27mm pancake than the X100s. Seems like a personal decision, though. The X100s advantages don't really speak to me.
