I guess if you only wanted a Canon 35mm that price would be okay. IMHO the Sig is a much better deal.

The value of a deal is relative to individual needs and preferences and not absolute. Canon is a better deal if you want the 35 1.4L. I'd spring for the Canon if I didn't already blow my lens budget on this month. But then for the price of the Sigma I bought an EF 35 2.0 IS USM and Oly 45 1.8 (M43) and had a little change left!

While it is on horizon for about 5 years I sold two of them and got one more after

Depends, I guess.

For me, the 35L is good enough from a sharpness perspective, so focus speed and accuracy become the main comparison points (if I don't get the shots I don't get paid; I've never, ever, had a single client complain about sharpness @ 1.4 on the Canon). I still hear far too many missed focus stories with the Sigma 35 f/1.4, notably compared to the 35L.

So if your measure is IQ-- yes, the Sigma is definitely the better deal. But don't totally discount other factors.

I could of course say exactly the same. I never had a single client complain about "missed focus" on the Sigma

I'm looking for a 35mm lens. Because of the excellent user reviews and impressive sampling of photos, I'm deciding between the Sigma 35mm 1.4 and the Canon 35mm f2 IS. With their prices at $899.00 and $549.00, I'm certainly not impressed with the Canon 35mm 1.4 selling at $1179.00.

That may well be the case. And it may be the case you've had clients complain about sharpness from a 35L. And I haven't collected the empirical evidence to make my argument firmly, but:

I'd bet you see far more instances of focus complaints on this particular Sigma than you do from the 35L. I surely get that reading from my time on these and other boards. I don't think the Sigma is a bad focuser, and I don't think it suffers from what some past Sigma lenses suffered. But I've surely seen a number of people go from 35L to Sigma and back because they didn't feel like the Sigma focused as quickly or accurately... to the detriment of their work. I have seen nobody switch away from the Canon because sharpness was to the detriment of their work (but I have seen people switch because they like the improved sharpness).

Ultimately, we use what gets the job done. I suspect the Sigma is sharper and the Canon focuses faster/more accurately. You take what you need, and that totally depends on our various required-thresholds for each measure. I'll take a 9 sharpness and 9 AF over a 10 sharpness and 8 AF every single time in this particular lens. Others may go for the reverse, even though neither measure is necessarily very far from the other.

LoL the best way to not receive a customer complaint on a mixed focus grab is to not show them the shot.

Who would even consider a 35L now that the Sig 35 exists?

The Sigma is cheaper and way way way sharper. Just wait until Sigma release their new 50 f/1.4. People will be dropping their 50L for it.

Sigma is not the company they used to be.

I will continue shooting my sharp, fast antique 35L until Canon releases the 35L II and leapfrogs Sigma, making it an antique.

Did you read the part of the thread... a couple posts above yours?

There are valid reasons for any given photographer to pick one or the other of the two lenses. Neither is better than the other in every measure (not even every subjectively important measure).

Some people will pay more for sharpness, speed, size, weight (the last two in BOTH directions), build, customer support, past relationships... and on and on.

The only foolish people are those who think A is always better than B for everyone.
