Nice -- thanks for sharing them.

On #4 there is something that happens with my mind where on the first glance it almost looks like she has her tongue sticking out or something because of the way the cage curves up and across. Once I look the effect goes away but each time I come back after looking at other pictures it happens again. Weird.

I've never tried to light someone wearing a helmet -- especially one with a cage. (and I'm not all that good at lighting to start with) I would think it would be a real challenge

Thank you, Bill. I hadn't noticed what you pointed out about #4 in all of my working with the image, but it jumped out at me the second I looked at it on my iPhone, so I can see what you are talking about and it does seem that the curve of the cage is the key.

Fantastic set Russ.

Is that Amanda Kessel in #2? The lighting is great … no shadows from her cage, but I'm curious as to why she posed the way she did? I can see a shot with her looking over her shoulder & getting her name & number on the back of the jersey, or less of a turn where she doesn't seem to be hiding her hands, stick etc. … she just seems to be in no man's land. Not trying to criticize your effort at all … just curious that's all.

Love the goalie shot & the pose & attitude in #3.

Hey thanks, Brent. Yes, that is Amanda Kessel. I can't tell you why that pose or that image. For some reason she was more difficult than the others to grab a good portrait of. Here's another (see below), more basic image of her, but I don't think she felt very comfortable and unfortunately there wasn't enough time to change that. Thanks again for your feedback.

About #3, attitude indeed. Whenever I asked her to show me her game face, her beautiful smile disappeared and that right eyebrow arched upward. It was hysterical, and she could go back and forth between the smile and the arch in a heartbeat. I was impressed!

Love the lighting on these shots. Very nice. That arched eyebrow is too funny.

Russ I really like the lighting on these. Sidelight with a main on Photographer right, kicker on the left and one on the background?

Jerry: Yeah, it was a nice bit of comic relief. Thanks.

Thanks, Ted. Appreciate the picks.

Matt: Thanks for your comment. There were six lights total. In front of the subject were a large square softbox to left/center and a light reflected off an umbrella to subject right. On both side edges of the background were 1x6 softbox striplights with soft grids, each oriented so that they more or less crossed just behind the subject. Then there were two lights to the sides and a bit in front of the subject, aimed at the background and shielded so there wasn't any spill onto the subject. There was a heck of a lot of tweaking going on throughout the shoot, but this was the basic setup for these athletes.

Ha … thought it was her. I've never seen her play but she was in town last year for the Worlds and helped beat our team (grr). You are right, she doesn't seem to interested/comfortable … I don't even think that's a true game face, just a blank stare. The other girl in #3 is still my favourite … love the attitude and the eyebrow lol. Got any of her smiling? Really love the poses too … I may have to try these for the teams I shoot, especially holding the helmet.

Take care,

Brent

Always love your stuff Russ... on the field or in the studio. Thanks for sharing.

Phil says Amanda's the better hockey player. She's sure better looking anyway.

Those are amazingly good. Love seeing this calibre of photography as it gives me something to strive for. May never make it, but at least I know what it will look like if I ever do<BG>. Thanks!

Great work Russ, few things though if I may
1. As a goalie and a photographer, I would have got all of Jessie's mask in the photo (at least I think it's jessie)

2 & 4. Why the helmets, especially on these two ladies. Amanda is pretty much a model and Julie has one of the most recognizable faces in women's hockey. I personally try to not shoot the ladies with their helmets on for the simple reason that they have to wear a full cage.

3 & 5. In #3 Hilary's right arm and in #5 Jocelyne's right arm a hot.

3. I love love love Hilary in this pic, the hair, the pose, he smirk....awesome.

Just me being nit picky, that's all. Did you have fun shooting them, could you tell Jocelyne & Monique apart at all. Not sure what it is with girls and twins and hockey, my university team has twins this year, thank god they have completely different hair.

Hey, Rick. I'm happy to receive feedback from the master, and I can assure you your portrait posts contributed to my anxiety (and inspiration!) as I approached this shoot! Your comments are spot-on.

With regard to #1, I went back and forth many times with my crop, and finally decided to cut off the very bottom of the mask because I felt the jersey collar was distracting. Below is a different crop with full mask.

As for why the helmets, the goal of my shoot was to run through a series of poses/costumes with each athlete, and when they brought props, we used them, though we also shot them without that stuff. So that's why I got shots of each with helmet, etc. The only reason I chose those to post is for some variety across the original 5 images. But I agree with your assessment. A helmet-free photo of Julie is posted below.

Thanks for pointing out the hot spots. I hadn't noticed those, but they're aglow!

I definitely had fun shooting them, and had the sense they were happy to be a part of the summit. They represent their team and their sport very well. Not sure I could have told the twins apart, but I really didn't have the chance to struggle with that. Each athlete came in with a sheet of paper with their name on it, and that was our first shot. In the case of the twins, we started with Monique, then Jocelyne joined us for the shoot of the two of them (I'm posting their 'identifier' since it was a cute image despite the uneven lighting), and we finished with Jocelyne.

Thanks again for your comments--much appreciated!

Russ

Man, too kind, but as for master.....man I'm not quite sure about that one?

I see what you're saying about the collar, and now seeing both would probably keep your original crop. It's something that you don't notice usually until post, but hey only us picky ass photogs would notice it, right!

BTW, I freaking love the twins shot!
