Great work Russ, few things though if I may
1. As a goalie and a photographer, I would have got all of Jessie's mask in the photo (at least I think it's jessie)
2 & 4. Why the helmets, especially on these two ladies. Amanda is pretty much a model and Julie has one of the most recognizable faces in women's hockey. I personally try to not shoot the ladies with their helmets on for the simple reason that they have to wear a full cage.
3 & 5. In #3 Hilary's right arm and in #5 Jocelyne's right arm a hot.
3. I love love love Hilary in this pic, the hair, the pose, he smirk....awesome.
Just me being nit picky, that's all. Did you have fun shooting them, could you tell Jocelyne & Monique apart at all. Not sure what it is with girls and twins and hockey, my university team has twins this year, thank god they have completely different hair....Show more →
Hey, Rick. I'm happy to receive feedback from the master, and I can assure you your portrait posts contributed to my anxiety (and inspiration!) as I approached this shoot! Your comments are spot-on.
With regard to #1, I went back and forth many times with my crop, and finally decided to cut off the very bottom of the mask because I felt the jersey collar was distracting. Below is a different crop with full mask.
As for why the helmets, the goal of my shoot was to run through a series of poses/costumes with each athlete, and when they brought props, we used them, though we also shot them without that stuff. So that's why I got shots of each with helmet, etc. The only reason I chose those to post is for some variety across the original 5 images. But I agree with your assessment. A helmet-free photo of Julie is posted below.
Thanks for pointing out the hot spots. I hadn't noticed those, but they're aglow!
I definitely had fun shooting them, and had the sense they were happy to be a part of the summit. They represent their team and their sport very well. Not sure I could have told the twins apart, but I really didn't have the chance to struggle with that. Each athlete came in with a sheet of paper with their name on it, and that was our first shot. In the case of the twins, we started with Monique, then Jocelyne joined us for the shoot of the two of them (I'm posting their 'identifier' since it was a cute image despite the uneven lighting), and we finished with Jocelyne.
Thanks again for your comments--much appreciated!
