p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Your opinions would be appreciated....

About three years ago I took up photography. It's been a great journey and this forum has been incredibly helpful, so I figured who better to share with and ask opinions of/from.

I have tried enough gear to know what I love to use, but cannot quite decide on what gear to unload, and what to do to round out the setup. Some of this gear I've purchased right here on FM - all of it from really great people, who have all been so helpful. So I'm back at the well, looking for more advise!

I shoot wildlife (in Montana so reach is important) and landscape. I assume many of you have been here before, so I'd love your thoughts. Not necessarily on what you think I should do, but your thoughts on what you would do with this gear.

all gear is canon brand.

What I will take to the grave (for now).

5D mkiii
600 mkii
1.4x mkiii
2.0x mkiii
50 1.4

That's the easy part.

what I'm willing to part with:

24-70 2.8 mki
16-35mkii
24-105
100-400
300 2.8 is mki
500 mki
7D

what I think I would like to buy:

24-70 2.8 mkii
70-200 2.8 mkii
good crop camera - fabled 7D mkii when it arrives maybe?

Things I'm torn over:

the darn 300 - it's just such an awesome lens, but wildlife here in montana is never close enough.... so I'm not sure it makes sense to keep it. I'm really not attached to anything else.

So, if you had this stuff and shoot what I shoot, what would you sell/trade/buy to get your perfect setup?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Tom

Here are recommendations based on keeping your basic capabilities, adding tilt and shift to those, and improving overall image quality.

Sell the 50 1.4.

Sell all the stuff you say you are willing to part with.

Buy what you say you want to buy.

Buy also:

Zeiss 50 f/2.0 MP.
Canon 24mm TS-E
Canon 90mm TS-E

With that you have your focal range all covered with great autofocus lenses that will let you work fast when you need to.

You also get a 50mm with notably better image quality than you had before (plus semi-macro capability you don't have). If you like it, it may point you toward some other lenses you could use to advantage on landscapes.

And you have two lenses that can introduce you to new techniques (tilts and shifts) you aren't yet using that many good landscape shooters swear by. You need a tripod, by the way, but I assume you probably already have that.

Also: If you feel the loss of ultra-wide capability because of getting rid of the 16-35, then consider the 17mm TS-E in its place.

I'm on my third 300/2.8L IS. What can I say?

It starts when you begin to wonder, "Do I really need it?". Then, you resolve that no, you really don't need it. Then you sell it. Then you find that you do need it. Then you get another one, and then you start to wonder...

OK - now for the easy part. Get the 70-200/2.8L IS II. It's a marvel.

Add a 1.4x III Extender (which you have), and you start thinking, "why do I need that 300/2.8L IS"... Then you remember that the 300/2.8L IS + 2x Extender is a lot lighter than the 500/4L IS or 600/4L IS II*. Or, you're in a non-wildlife situation where you want a 70-200/2.8 on one cam, and a 300/2.8 on another camera.

As far as a good crop camera goes, how about a 1DIV?

With respect to the rest of your lists: the 24-70/2.8L II is also peerless.

OK, after re-reading your post, here's my prescription: (I've owned or still own all of your "part with" gears):

Sell

24-70 2.8 mki
16-35mkii
24-105
100-400
500 mki
7D

Buy

TS-E 17/4L (just in case)
24-70 2.8 mkii
70-200 2.8 mkii

You'll probably have about $3k left over for film, whatever that is.

Regardless, you're in a good place.

Cheers,
Jim

* sell your 500/4L IS, or give your 600/4L IS II to me.

P.S. have you tried a 1DX?

Ah! The possibility of macro and the tilt shifts. Another learning curve, which is a big part of the fun for me. Thanks splthrop.

How about selling 300, 100-400, 500 and getting the 200-400 f/4L, which has built-in 1.4x TC? Then again if you really aren't finding much use for that 300-500 range in Montana, might be a waste. The thing I like about the 300 is it makes a relatively lightweight and compact high quality 600 f/5.6 for hiking and IQ is still excellent

Landscape, 17 f/4 TS-E, 24-70 f/2.8 mk II, 70-200 f/4L IS (f/2.8 mk II is awesome but maybe not needed) would be sweet as would say a Zeiss 21 f/2.8 or even a Samyang 14 f/2.8 for those big sky night shots that Montana would be great for.

Jim - Thank you for the thoughts. Two comments: I've been afraid to try a 1Dx, I might like it and maybe once I actually learn how to use the 600 i can begin to think about giving it away - but only if you send a couple lobsters a week for a few decades....

and you too see value in the tilt shift, but only at the wide end? Does the 24-70mkii fulfill your landscape needs?

Keep the 300 for now along with your 7D. Buy a 17 or 24 TSE. Trade up to the 50L.

Pixel, I kayak frequently, but just cringe at the thought of the 300 over/near water. almost want to keep the 100-400 for this reason. But looks like another vote form primes and a tse. plus I like the idea of the 300/600, I really hadn't considered this advantage to keeping the 300!

Not gonna happen.

Sometimes...

I also use the TS-E 17/4L and 24/3.5L II, plus Mamiya 645 35mm to 150mm lenses on a Mirex TS adapter. Plus, various "Alt" lenses - mostly Zeiss, which are Neiss.

You'll have to start a new thread to find out what I need to fulfill my landscape needs...

You are lusting after the best lens 24-70 v2 and 70-200 v2. I have both in version 1 and never use them - thus I have know if I get them they will just sit on my shelf. Your goal is not the best looking lens for pixel peeping but the ones that you can get the best pictures with.

On the other hand, 24-105 and 100-400 are not the best lens but they are really good and always work. I would never get rid of them. The 24-105 is almost as good as the 24-70 above about 30mm with IS for handheld and longer reach - and the extra 200mm on the 100-400 over the 70-200 just means I never use the 70-200. 200 and 300 are too short for most wildlife. These lens (24-105 and 100-400) are the perfect size and weight to alway have in your kit.

I suggest:
Keep the 100-400 for travel. Keep the 24-105 for hiking.
Get rid of the 300 f2.8 - its too short. This is a sports lens.
Get rid of the 500 v1 - its redundant to the 600 v2. You can't bring them both. I did. Hard to part with but never used it.
Get rid of the 17-35 v2 - it is not as good as TS lens. You can't bring them all.

Buy the TS17 and the TS24 and the 200-400. Or TS17 (and use the 1.4x) and 200-400.

[I also like the zeiss 15mm f2.8, zeiss 25 f2, zeiss 35 1.4, and canon 85 1.2 for night shooting)

The 200-400 w 1.4 is great because the animal is often too close and you can zoom in. When they are far, switch to the 600. They complement each other very well and cover all the bases.

The TS17 and TS24 are necessary to get non distorted landscapes particularly when trees are close. Look at Gunzorros post in this forum on TS. If you get the TS24, you don't need the 24-70 because the 24-70 is only best at the widest. The 24-105 is just as good at 35mm. The 45ts is likely a good lens but I am rarely in this range. I shoot landscape lots at 17, some at 24 and some at 100mm.

Since I bought the 5diii I rarely use the 7d. The 5diii with 1.4 and double the iso is pretty close to the 7d. But you won't get anything much for the 7d so save it for reach on good light days.

I have thought about the 1div but differing batteries, heavier, bulky, not nearly as good as 5diii - makes it a tough choice. Hopefully the 7diii will be 1.3x and good at high iso.

That 300 to me just doesn't make sense in your listed shooting categories, unless you just really use it all the time? Maybe compressed landscape..I guess I mean, great lenses are nice to have, but if they're unused, are they really all that great?

Another vote for a TSE, but I'd go 24mm. If you don't go TSE (they're pretty big and bulky to carry and to use), maybe a ZE 21mm? Tough call IMO, I'd personally probably end up going 24 TSE just because TSE lenses can do some awesome things non-TSE lenses can't, but it would be tough, as I love the look of the 21ZE.
