p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 14mm Samyang for Aurora Photos

Making the jump to FF with a used 5d2 and I want to get an ultra wide f2.8 lens for aurora photos since my Tokina 11-16 or 17-55 f/2.8 EF-S lens will not work on FF.

I'm thinking about the Samyang 14mm primarily since I've read a lot of good things about the lens on this forum rather than Canon's 16-35. I can use a 24-105mm for more traditional daylight landscapes. Besides I can get the Samyang and the 24-105 for less than the 16-35.

My question is how is the Samyang IQ at f2.8 with long exposures of 5 to 30 seconds?

Thanks,

Dave

The quality of the lens doesn't change with the time of the exposure This is a very good quality lens, much better corners than the Canon zooms, but that doesn't really matter for aurora pics so much. Get the lens-it's one of the best values out there. There is some moustache distortion if you do architecture, but there are very good corrections available for that.

The Samyang's lack of coma at f2.8 is will documented on FM. Great for ultra wide night sky - you get sharp stars and shorter exposures than comparable lenses.

You might want to get a copy of DXO Viewpoint v2 to use with the 14mm
there is an eval on the DXO website
http://www.dxo.com/intl/photography/dxo-viewpoint

note that DXO Optics Pro v8 has the same corrections as viewpoint in the RAW converter

some samples with 14mm

yup, great lens. Just get one and enjoy with your 5D II.
If you are shooting astro images, lens correction profiles are probably not even necessary.
Here is a single image with the Samyang 14mm f/2.8, 23 seconds, iso 4000. No lens profile correction applied.
I didn't care for the sky glow and cloud strands affecting the image quality and color, but I think it performed well.

I recently visited Fairbanks and photographed auroras. Used a 5D Mark III with the Samyang 14mm lens. Sharp from corner-to-corner wide-open and good color reproduction. Can't ask for more.

Haven't processed my aurora photos yet, but I have a quite a few of the milky way taken with that lens. Here's one:

That's not 100% correct . While your 17-55 is EFS and is not suitable for use on FF (some EFS lenses will work with a slight mod) your 11-16 is EF and will mount without damage to your camera .
At wider angles it won't fill the frame but it will if you set it to 16mm .
You will have a 16mm 2.8 prime of very good quality

While true, I debated this too, and decided since the 11-16 would be stuck at 15-16mm to avoid vignetting, the S14/2.8 is cheaper provided it doesn't allow filters. I went with the 14 and never looked back.

Dude :

Yep that's true , but if the OP hasn't let his Tokina go then it may be worth looking into using it .
Added advantage over the extra lens purchase is its AF as well so can be used for more general stuff as well .

That said the samyang 14 has a very good rep

samyang 14/2.8 is good for the price.

Best is zeiss 15 2.8, then canon 14 2.8, then tamron 17-35 2.8, then maybe samyang according to reviewing all on :
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=487&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=2&LensComp=769&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=3

This is consistent with my experience and photzone.de testing.

I have the Rokinon 14mm (same as Samyang) and it literally stays glued to my 5D3 for any astro work that I do. It blows the doors off my 17-40mm, especially in regard to corner sharpness.

I've been swayed and given the low price of this lens it's well worth a try. Ordering mine today.
