Sharp, Bright images with good action. I like these and my only suggestion would be to try and get lower.

Thanks Bill & Mike for your comments.
For this game I used a speedlight on my monopod about 24 inches below the lens.

Question...so you are connecting your speedlight to your monopod and then what are you camera settings? Are you shooting in TTL? doesnt that limit you to 1/250? Great pictures!

Speedlight is on a PocketWizard Flex TT5 and a Mini TT1 on camera. With this system I can Hypersync up to 1/8000. I'm shooting around 1/800-1/1000.
For now TTL is working for me.

Great shots and brilliant use of the Pocket Wizard and the speedlight. Do you use a Better Beamer or something of the sort on the flash AndyD ?

Andy,

I have been toying with the ideal of putting the pocket wizard TT5's to use this fall. My gear list is eerily similar to yours -- D3s, 300 2.8, 70-200 2.8, 28-70 2.8, SB900's, Flex TT5's.

Let me start by saying that I typically hate the look of flashed football, but there is a nice "gotcha" to yours. Couple of questions if I might about your set-up. SB900 or SB800? Using one flash or two on a bracket? Really like the use of Hypersync on these too. What ISO were you able to use?

Thanks for your feedback. I may PM you to pic your brain a little bit more.

Rick

As it good as it gets right there when it comes to flashed football. Great job.

Good stuff, even for a Nikon guy.... High iso & a puff of Hypersync (HSS for us Canon guys) flash to fill is the new way to go!!! Nicely done!

I don't use a Better Beamer. Instead I zoom the flash to 135mm - 200mm as needed. By the way I use an SB-900 speedlight.

Hi Rick,
I'm using an SB-900 speedlight on a Flex TT5 and that is attached to an umbrella bracket. The umbrella bracket is then attached to a manfrotto super clamp. My ISO hovers around 5000. I just want to fill the shadows and not overpower the ambient light.

Exactly right. Although, my ISO is around 5000. Not too extreme!

How about your shutter speed and aperture?
Depending on the ambient light,I might slow down the shutter and/or open the aperture.

I use a 5d3 for night football, ISO between 8-10k, 400 2.8, normally I start at 1/1000-1/1250 @ F 3.5... Flash, 600 RT with ST-E3 radio ETTL @ -2/3... This gets me in the ballpark at most venues...

Thanks for sharing Andy, i'll have to try it next time i shoot night football. I have the same rig as you. But our fields here are very poorly lit i must say. No doubt my backgrounds wouldn't be as bright no matter the setting. But it would certainly be better than my usual results at 10,000 iso and then some.

I suppose the low positionning of the flash on the monopod helps to avoid red eyes (or cats eyes) on the players, right ? Great idea i must say
