p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Question about Nikon AIS Lenses on 5d Mark III

This may sound like a dumb question, but I will ask anyway.

I used to have a Nikon 50mm f/1.2 AIS lens that I used for shooting video on a Canon 5d Mark 2. It worked like a champ, and was one of my favorite combos. Like an idiot though, I sold it, and now I want to pick up another one. My question for you is - does the 50 f/1.2 AIS work on the Canon 5d Mark 3? I seem to remember trying it on my friends Mark III back when I had it, and I seem to remember that there was something in front of the sensor on the Mark III that physically prevented the lens from mounting properly. I was using a Fotodiox adapter if that makes any difference. I really miss this combo, but I want to make sure that the lens will work on the Mark III before I pull the trigger (again...).

Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide.

Regards,

Bobby

Some lenses rear ends hit the Mirror Box on the the Mark II and III. I do not believe the MIII is worse in this area though. Some of the earlier Nikon's protrude further into the lens box, so it's something that you have to watch out for. You can file down the metal protrusion on the lenses so they clear properly, though you risk damaging the rear element.

You can also shave the mirror if you don't mind voiding the warranty. Most equipment is designed to go bad 1 week after the warranty expires anyway

Thanks guys. I may post this over on the Nikon forum to see if anyone is currently using this lens with the Mark III. Shaving mirrors and rear-protrusions are not my forte...

You shouldn't have an issue. A buddy of mine switched to Canon from Nikon and wanted to keep his AIS 35/1.4, 50/1.2, and 200/2. We put the Leitax mounts on last week and all three worked like champs on both his 5DIII and Dx.

You can also remove the rear guard from the lens (3 screws, iirc) if it is an interference.

I've done this on my 20/2.8 AIS. The nice thing here is that it is totally reversible should you want to use it on a different body or sell the lens later. No need to shave in this case. Of course if it is the element itself rather than the guard then that's a different matter.
