p.1 #1 · Canon EF-S 55-250 IS STM Super Sharp!

The Digital Picture have added the 55-250 IS STM lens to their lens sample database:

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=856&Camera=736&Sample=0&FLI=5&API=1&LensComp=777&CameraComp=736&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=5&APIComp=0

It looks like a very sharp lens even compared to the more expensive L lenses!

Here's the 55-250 STM vs the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II:

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=856&Camera=736&Sample=0&FLI=4&API=3&LensComp=687&CameraComp=736&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=3&APIComp=4

It's sharper than the 70-300 IS L!

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=856&Camera=736&Sample=0&FLI=4&API=1&LensComp=738&CameraComp=736&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=3&APIComp=2

I am sure it is a fine lens, but there is something wrong with the DP test. If you switch to the IDsIII and the 70-300L, it tells an entirely different story: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspxLens=856&Camera=736&Sample=0&FLI=4&API=1&LensComp=738&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=3&APIComp=2

You must compare lenses on the same camera. You cannot compare the two lenses on a 1DS III, but the results would be different from the crop body if you could. Trying to compare crop results and FF results for a lens will always leave you confused. Don't even try.

Usually I would say that is the case, but the 70-300L performed so much worse on the 60D than the 1dsIII that I think there was an error in their methodology or they have a bad 60d.

I don't really trust TDP, that said Canon's MTF predicted that the 55-250 STM would do very well, basically as well as an L and similar to the 70-200 f/4 IS just about.

TDP got some bad results for the 70-300L all around compared to what many others got (and even more so they got brutally awful results for the tamron 70-300 VC and most other tamron lenses for that matter)

Generally his 1Ds3 FF tests seem consistent with what I see in my lenses. The 60D tests seem less so. The new 55-250 STM does seem an improvement over the previous 55-250. I may have to upgrade since its a regular use lens on my (wife's ) SL1. If its sharper and lets me do smooth panning videos, might be worth it. I'll wait a while to see.

I'm excited about this lens- the equivalent of ~85-400mm with STM is enticing- and I have to wonder if it outdoes my 70-300 non-L on the same camera.

Also looking forward to the DPAF equipped Rebels-a T6i with the 18-135 would certainly be nice. Slap on this lens, then maybe a 10-22 and a 50/1.8 and 85/1.8 and call it done.

Looks like it might be a good match for my EOS-M if Canon fails to deliver an EOS-M telephoto zoom in a reasonable time frame.

I hope they do come out with an M version of that lens. That and about a 50 to 60 1.8 IS along with the exiting lenses would provide about what I want in M system lenses. Wouldn't mind an upgraded M II camera though.

Amazon is apparently selling them, and has some in stock. There are a few user reviews too, and it does look nice- but it doesn't look like any of the review houses have beaten on it yet.

My dad just purchased this lens for his M, I will take it for a test ride when I get the chance. It looks to be a very nice lens, especially considering the price.

I would take those ISO chart crops with a large grain of salt (we've had that discussion here before at FM)...in other instances those crops have not always correlated to my own gear comparison experiences (and other published test results). I think testing lenses can be a bit of a tricky business.

According to those crops the $350 STM lens is sharper than both the 70-200/2.8 II IS and 70-300L on the 60D. If you believe that...I have some land for sale...

Having owned several copies I can tell you that the 70-200/2.8 II IS and 70-300L are both very sharp lenses on both crop and FF cameras...sharp enough that arguing that something is 'sharper' is sort of a moot point IMO.

I'm sure the STM zoom will be plenty sharp and a great little lens...especially for video (in fact, I'll probably buy one if I pick-up a 70D)...but I wouldn't sell your L telezooms just yet.

Having just ordered an EOS-M, I might consider picking up one of these; but not until it goes on sale. I wound up grabbing the second version at $199 retail, so I consider maybe $249 to be the limit.

Of course, it would have to perform better than my 70-300 non-L for that to be reasonable.

Being able to fit it in a cargo pocket was among the draws . Of course, I'm also looking forward to the next EOS-M body- I just wanted to grab the lenses, flash, and adapter while they're still at fire-sale bundle pricing. I made a thread about it, but I did get the body, both lenses, flash, and adapter for just under $600. More than I wanted to spend right now, but I can make use of it!

Yeah...if they put the DPAF from the 70D in the next body I'm guessing there will be much more interest in version 2...and at the current bundle prices the current body is practically disposable!

I got my 55-250 IS STM Today.

I haven't had a chance to use it properly yet, but I took a few test shots and it seems sharper than the old Mk I and Mk II versions I've owned.

The best thing about this new lens is the minimum focusing distance has now been reduced making it better for closeup and macro photos!

The build quality feels a bit better than the previous versions (feels similar to the 18-135 IS STM) and the focusing is quicker and quieter than the previous versions and now we have a proper focusing ring and a non rotating front (big deal for me because I use Polarising filters a lot).

Wish they had made this one with a metal mount like the 18-135 STM...I see in the specs it's still plastic.

How does the 55-250 STM compare to the 18-135 STM with regard to AF speed/noise and IS noise? I'm very impressed with how quiet the AF and IS is on the 18-135 STM...
