p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Zuiko 28/3.5 terrible vignetting!

I just received my G.Zuicko 28/3.5 in the mail, excited to test it out after all the rave reviews. I'm shooting on a full frame 5D Mark II and the vignetting is REALLY aggressive. I think I must have bought a copy made for MFT cameras or something, but it doesn't say OM-D on it anywhere. The other possibility is that the Fotodios adapter I bought is messing something up here...

If anyone has expertise in this area, and could help me figure out what I did wrong and how to make sure the next one I buy actually works with my camera, I would really appreciate it.

Many thanks!

You might try again with a better lighting scenario. If I'm reading the scene right, this is twilight/dusk scene with the sun near the center (but out of view). If so, you have effectively taken an image of the natural radial falloff that extends away from the sun.

What looks like terrible lens vignetting may very well be attributed more to your lighting/exposure than to your lens. I'm not suggesting that there isn't any vignetting on the Oly (WA Oly's do tend to vignette some till you stop down a bit, but I think your chosen scene is contributing to the "terrible" vignetting that you are seeing.

I wish that were true! It does look like that and does make for a nice photo, but I'm actually shooting away from the sun, toward a very neutral sky. Here is a shot directly above me of a patch of sky with almost no (actual) falloff at all:

It's been a while since I owned that lens but I seem to remember that it does indeed have heavy vignetting wide open when used on my 5D long ago.

Seems pretty normal to me. Most fast wide angle primes vignette heavily. For many shots, especially close-ups and environmental portraits, you can use this to your advantage -- it can be a really nice effect. If you're shooting landscapes and don't want vignetting, stop down to f/8 and use a monopod or tripod.

What f/stop?

Here's my Oly 28/3.5 compared with my Nikon vs. Zeiss 28's from a few years back.

Yes, that makes sense. I'm all the way open at 3.5 here. Thanks for the help. As long as it's "normal" and not something wrong with the lens, I can use it or just get more light and stop down. Thanks all!

Many of those small, wide Olympus lenses act like this with regard to vignetting. No free lunch I guess as otherwise those small, Olympus wides perform extremely well.

Vignetting is Oly's Achille's Heel on their wides till you stop down a touch. Distortion is typically better on the Oly's than some others (design choices), but with wides it is a "pick your poison" kinda thing.

Nobody gets everything in one package, until you get something like the 24L TS-E II, which has an oversized image circle to allow for the T/S movements. It's usually either vignetting or distortion or soft corners/sharp center. Not too many wides that have good even sharpness into the corners, no distortion and no vignetting wide open ... especially for the price of Oly's little gem 28/3.5

Yes, I just picked this one up for $35 so I have very little to complain about. I'm going to get outside tomorrow when the sun's up and try again.

Yeah, vignetting was also not quite as noticeable on film, although, of course, it is easier to correct it with digital.

Yeah, what you're seeing is normal; my 35/3.5 and 24/2.8 both have very heavy vignetting on FF wide open.

That doesn't look like heavy vignetting to me, I think of heavy as the corner tips being black and fall off extending to the rule of thirds, this is light to medium to me.
The vignette tool in LR should be able to fix it easily.

You're right. I guess "terrible" was a bit much. I am using this lens for video though, which leaves me a little less latitude in post, but I will see what I can do.

I had that lens for a number of years and used it on the 5D I used to have and I would agree with others that the vignetting you are showing seems normal (i.e., that is what I saw with my lens as well).

Here you go:

http://photocornucopia.com/1055.html

Vignetting performance of a group of 28mm lenses, namely:
Leica Elmarit-R 28/2.8 E55
Contax Distagon 28/2.8 AE
Contax Distagon 28/2.8 MM
Olympus Zuiko 28/2.0
Olympus Zuiko 28/2.8
Olympus Zuiko 28/3.5
Kiron 28/2.0
Canon EF 17-40/4 L at 28mm
Canon EF 24-70/2.8 L at 28mm

The Zuiko's all perform rather poorly in this respect, even the fast 28 F2.0 which still vignettes in the corners at F8 and 11. The Kiron 28 F2.0 seems best of the bunch in terms of vignetting.

So many reasons to avoid FF sensors and only a one to embrace them. All wide open on a m4/3:

Not even a hint of vignetting.

Thanks JohnJ. That's an incredibly helpful comparison. I guess if I had gone with the 28/2.8 I would have bought myself both an extra stop of light and an extra stop of softer vignetting. The lesson I've learned (for video) is: sharpness of lens—not so noticeable in HD; vignetting—noticeable at all resolutions.

With the couple of stops SNR advantage of FF over m4/3, correcting vignetting is no big deal, and cropping is also an option. Plus, you're talking about a 56mm f7 equivalent on FF, and I don't think such a lens would have much issue with vignetting on FF.

Sounds like "pick your poison" applies to video as well as stills. .

For stills, I shy away form distortion. But a lens with a slight amount of mustache distortion that I wouldn't like for stills, might be okay for video. I'd think the slight mustache distortions would be something difficult to notice with either frame motion or motion within the frame to mitigate it being realized.
