p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · random question for X-E1 owners (or any camera w/ EVF)

if you don't put any lens on the camera and you turn it on, what do you see in the EVF? do you see a blurry approximation of what's in front of the sensor, or do you see a wall of bright white?

i just got an X-E1 in the mail. my lens didn't arrive yet. i turned on the camera just to check out the functions, but the EVF starts off dark, and then it bleeds to white until it's all bright white. doesn't matter what's in front of the sensor.

is this because i don't have a lens mounted? the rear LCD doesn't show all white, it shows a blurry image of the colors in front of the camera.

just wondering if this evf is shot. seems weird.

and when i say it bleeds to white i mean it looks like something out of The Matrix where these columns of white pixels just fill in until the entire thing goes bright white. it seems really unnatural.

and yes, i realize i'm being a moron by not waiting until i get the lens to try it out. but i wanted to use this thing this weekend, and if i need a replacement i need to order it asap.

weird...I bought one once and put the lens on and the view was pitch black so I sent it in for repair...they removed the lens cap under warranty

Yes all white. There's no focused light at all. It's the same on an OVF too.

what i'm seeing is different than, say, removing a lens from an SLR and looking through the viewfinder that way. i mean the EVF isn't responsive to any changes in light at all. it's bright, solid white no matter if you're pointing it at a lamp or sitting in a dark room. i really think it's shot... i've never seen anything like it before. i held a lens over the mount, which i'd think would at least provide a lousy out of focus image, and there's no change at all. it's like it doesn't register anything - it's simply white.

Why don't you just wait till the lens arrives and see how it behaves then?

Though I did just take the lens off my E-M5 and the screen/EVF definitely responded to changes in light.

Do you see the same all-white display on the rear LCD?

same for my xpro1, dont worry about it.
the camera knows there is no lens attached and probably turns the evf off or something.

no, the display on the LCD responds to changes in light. only the viewfinder goes all white.

but based on what spyro said maybe it's just the way the fuji behaves

my OMD didn't go all white, which is why this concerned me

On my X-E1, the EVF behaves exactly the same as the LCD when no lens is attached...

Does the X-E1 have a setting to allow shooting without a lens attached, or something?

Yes, that is the setting used for legacy MF lenses, extension tubes, bellows, etc.
