p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Red Rock Sedona

Here is one image of the Red Rocks of Sedona shot last year in late October. This is an HDR of two images, shot at 0 and -1. Processed in Nik HDR but the normal option chosen. I just wanted the sky and the foreground to be balanced. I used 2 stop ND grad but I felt that the sky was looking washed out in the "0" ev adjustment setting. I cloned out 5 or 6 people out of the frame, boosted the reds slightly and pulled down the saturation to around -10 or more. The setting sun does make this place come alive.

Your comments and criticism are most welcome.

The HDR seems a little flat, so I went ahead and tried my hand and digital blending of the two layers. Which one do you like?

Thank you.

Maji, very nice, I prefer the second version, it looks more alive.

Hey Maji,

I like the 2nd version the best here also.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I guess I need to learn how to blend better as the result seems better than HDR.

It's a unique view of this icon- and very well executed.
I also prefer the second version, AMaji, although I edited the first one- using my old-and-discarded-by-almost-everyone techniques- and preferred it over your second rendition.
But it's all a matter of subjective taste.

Nice work. I really like this vantage point compared to the more often used ones in this location and have spent a lot of time in this exact spot. My only critique is that to my eye the image appears rotated to the left a little.

Thank you Charlie. Yes, processing is all matter of taste and preferences, so there is no right or wrong.

Thank you rainshadow. I think you are correct. It is slightly tilted. I loved this location too. The flowing water can be used as a leading line and the colorful reflections are something I like. Also, just 4 or 5 people to clone out... that is something to like too

I really like the second one you posted. The first is very nice as well but as you stat, flat (I fall into this trap quite often). Beautiful colors! Print it and hang it!

I like #2 much better. The rock faces look much more realistic - as does the sky. Also, I like the perspective.

#2 is rather nice.

That said, I'd tone down the reflections a hair, and probably push the whole foreground down another 1/2 stop or so.

Thank you guys for your comments and suggestions.

Greg,
I understand what you saying but then I used two exposures so that I could keep the foreground brighter. I will check out how it looks when I pull down the exposure a bit.
Thank you for your suggestions.
