More of the send-off on the bloggity blog. My second got some nice close-ups of important family members lit by the lanterns, too... but this is from two days ago and I haven't culled yet, let alone edited the whole set - even this is basically straight out of camera with a slight WB tweak.

Pretty cool experience, I'm curious if others have done this before. I've only seen it in movies etc. until now. Ideally I would love to see this done at a larger wedding, or just on a larger scale even with a small wedding. Like 20 or 30 instead of 8. But it was still cool I think.

Looks cool.

Would it be correct to say that as far as exposure goes, this is basically the same scenario as a sparkler exit?

I've photographed it twice now. First wedding was about the same size as yours:

2nd wedding, it was crazy windy and we could barely get one lantern lit while roughly 30 people used their bodies to block the wind:

I've also only had 2 sparkler exits, but I find those harder to photograph. With lanterns, people have to stay still and they hold the lantern really close to their face so it lights them up nicely. With sparklers, most people are moving and holding the sparklers away from themselves, so for me, I struggle more with blurry photos.

I did one with about 15-20, beautiful night, no wind. But man, they struggled to get them lit and the way it worked out, they'd finally get one going in the air every 3 or 4 minutes, so there wasn't this cool group of lanterns flying off together. They may not have had enough lighters to go around. Still made for some fun shots, though.

Not shown are the multiple ones that stuck in tree(s) and required fire extinguishing, was kinda funny.

I had a couple try to do this, but it was on a beach and the wind was approximately 20-25mph. The lanterns wouldn't light, and the lanterns wouldn't fly away other than just falling and hitting the sand. It was also so misty that I couldn't use flash, and we were 400-500 feet from any light source that the hotel was giving off. Needless to say, pictures didn't turn out. We got a total of 2 of them in the air. But it was funny to watch everyone try.

Nice shots here!

Love these. Did one at Ft. Belvoir in Virginia last year. They went to the front of the officers' club and started lighting them up. Two unfortunate factors. First, they didn't coordinate their releases, so they went off in batches of two or three. Second, the wind was blowing toward the club house. So one landed on the roof and burned there for five minutes. I watched it until it went out. It was a long five minutes.

My assistant had a butane torch like you would light a cigar with so winds wouldn't have been an issue and we very clearly told everyone not to release until we have them the go ahead so it worked out - thankfully they were a cooperative bunch.

Love these exits. Luckily, we had knowledge beforehand, so we were able to get a pretty solid shot. The lanterns themselves are pretty hard to light, so it took the bride and groom quite a long time to get it lit. The problem is getting enough hot air, just like a hot air balloon, to lift the lantern. BEAUTIFUL photos and results though.

And one more thing...as a service to the bride and groom, you may want to check with the venue to see if they are allowed (it'll get you brownie points!). Venues that are near residential areas probably won't allow the usage of these because of the liability attached (risk for house fires because of not knowing where they will land). I found out after the fact...I'm getting married this weekend and didn't think to ask my venue (I assumed it was okay because I'm used to sparklers being okay). They said no because they are on a mountain situated close to a residential area. I felt terrible because my mom had purchased all of the lanterns as a gift, but now we'll use them at the rehearsal dinner. I simply didn't know because this is still a fairly new thing.

As an interesting side note, we had a woman come to us *screaming* about how many birds die running into those lanterns (the shots taken during the engagement shoot portion). I calmly asked her if she had anything better to do with her time, she said it '..was a serious matter'; I then asked her how many children she figured were exploited for pennies a day to make the Nike's she was wearing. I bonded with my clients that day.
