p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Incoming black skimmer

We had cold front move in last night and I got to Nickerson Beach about 30 minutes after it passed at about 8am. It reminded me of my winter visits as it was me, a fisherman and the Nassau County Police patrolling the beach in there SUV. The birds had move out of the roped off nesting area and were in a few family groupings on the same near the water. I took my time moving in till I was almost inside one of the larger family groupings of a few hundred skimmers. I spend a few hours in this position and for some reason after all this time; this skimmer decided it was going to chase me off by buzzing me. This photo was taken during one of it’s attack runs and is the only image I’ve processed so far. Many more will follow.

Give that bird some dental floss....they do have a stealthy profile.

Nice shot Morris. Guess we'll have to await the outcome of the challenge.

As many have made this suggestion, here it is as a vertical

http://qcpages.qc.cuny.edu/~maltman/092213DSC_8823-V.jpg

This works better than I expected it would

Thank you Herb,

I did not expect the vertical to work so it's a great learning experience Herb

Looking forward to seeing more of the "attack," Morris.
What an amazing lower beak they have.
Even though you probably felt as though he wouldn't actually stab you with that lethal weapon, I bet it raised your hackles when he passed over your head- close.
Something about being attacked by an angry bird. Several times I've had blackbirds swoop close during nesting season- and the experiences have been quite- uh- memorable.

Thank you Charlie,

I've become used to this and simply zoomed back to make it easier to photograph it and went to work. I was thinking you are not going to do it so I'll have fun'
