Sneaking over from the Nikon board for a few minutes...

Today my significant other bought a camera he has always wanted: a vintage Leica rangefinder camera. According to the serial number, it's a IIIg made in 1957. Everything mechanical appears to work perfectly, but we have a question about loading film.

At the store we were advised that the first four inches or so of film/leader needs to be trimmed in a specific way so that it loads onto the spindles correctly, and that there is a specific Leica template ("Ablon") available to assist in this task. Does anybody have any advice on where one of these can be found, or know of any other gadget(s) used for this purpose? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

there are official lead trimmers but you can just make a template and use an exacto knife.

I doesn't need to be precise. I used to tear the film leader to the approximately correct shape. No mis-loads.

The difficulty with loading pre-M Leicas is that you have to insert the tongue of the film in the takeup spool and then push the film down past the pressure plate. . There is no "doorflap" such as in the Ms so that you can check that sprockets engage, and so that pressure can be applied after the film is seated.

The purpose of the cutting template was to make long film tongues which would be easier to push down past the pressure plate. Modern films have a short tongue, old films had a long one.. I still have an ABLON lying in some drawer from the time I used LTM. It was employed when preparing single rolls from long rolls of bulk film .

These days, old Leitz implements are urneasonably expensive; a knife , scissors or tearing will do the same job, but with less precision.
