The difficulty with loading pre-M Leicas is that you have to insert the tongue of the film in the takeup spool and then push the film down past the pressure plate. . There is no "doorflap" such as in the Ms so that you can check that sprockets engage, and so that pressure can be applied after the film is seated.
The purpose of the cutting template was to make long film tongues which would be easier to push down past the pressure plate. Modern films have a short tongue, old films had a long one.. I still have an ABLON lying in some drawer from the time I used LTM. It was employed when preparing single rolls from long rolls of bulk film .
These days, old Leitz implements are urneasonably expensive; a knife , scissors or tearing will do the same job, but with less precision.
