I have caved, I have decided on the OMD EM-1. I will eventually get a lens turbo, but in the mean time, I'd like to pair it up with a nice portrait lens. What would you recommend?

The 45/1.8 is amazing value and great portrait lens. The PL 42.5/1.2 Noctricon should be even more stunning but it's not out yet and it will be expensive I'm sure.

The 75/1.8 is also an amazing lens for portraits.

Sorry ... I am not a fan of MF alt lenses.

The native m4/3 lenses have become so good and mostly reasonably priced, that I hardly ever use "alt" lenses anymore on m4/3. My favourite used to be the Zeiss CY 85mm f/1.4, but after I acquired the Zuiko 75mm f/1.8, a better lens in most respects, the Zeiss is permanently mounted on my Contax RX where it feels very much at home

Wow ... the C/Y Zeiss 85/1.4 on the Contax RX was my absolute favorite film camera and lens! Loved the well-damped and silky smooth shutter. My near-future favorite camera and lens will be the E-M1 and either the Nocticron 42.5/1.2 or 75/1.8 lens. I just sold my silver 75 and picked up a black one.

I've seen some nice samples from the Voigtlander 42.5mm f0.95. I'm actually curious to see how well that lens conpares to the Nocticron 42.5 f1.2.

Then, you'll love the E-M1. The shutter sounds like a somewhat muted version of the RX shutter. And I agree about it's greatness; Contax RX for manual focus and Nikon F6 when I want AF

I have a bunch of alt lenses, but I primarily shoot them on Fuji since the native m43 glass is so good and covers a good range. My favorite alt on m4/3 is probably my FD 50-300mm f/4.5L. It's huge, but it gives me super telephoto range with a fast aperture and very good image quality.

In the portrait range, the Oly 45, Oly 60 and Oly 75 are all awesome. And I also use the Panasonic 35-100/2.8 quite a lot in that range, especially for studio work. On m4/3, a good 50/1.4 can be had for cheap and will be good if you want to go Alt. of these, I'm partial to the FD 50/1.4 and the SMC Takumar 50/1.4.

I have an old Zuiko 55/1.2, a Canon FL 55/1.2 (converted to EF mount), and a Tamron SP 90/2.5 macro in EF mount - but I am not using any if these lenses (I do have the adaptor for them) as really, there is no shortage of good/better m43 lenses, and I really don't like to MF, especially for portrait work when you need to work quickly.

25 1.4 is not really an alt lens, however it is my favorite m4/3.

That's because we are talking about portrait lenses. Sure, you can do nice portraits with a 25mm or even 17mm, but 35-75mm is generally more suited to portrait work.

How is this lens alt on a M43 body? It's native.

Another lens to consider would be the Canon nFD 50L f/1.2. It is supposed to be an excellent lens and I have always thought it would be a good match for a m4/3rds.

the 25 is not really what people typically consider a "portrait lens."

Back when I was shooting adapted lenses, I thought the C/V Color-Skopar 50/2.5 was beautiful on m43. There is a reason these lenses command such high prices even though they are not fast enough for most gear snobs.

That aside, what he said about going native. Hard to adapt anything near 50mm when the Oly 45/1.8 is so good, small, fast and light.

For a portrait lens, the nearer Sigma 60mm is really what has my attention. Absolutely stellar from all reports!

Can I have two? I love both my Canon 100mm f2.8 in FD B/L mount, and my Tokina 300mm f2.8 AT-X Pro (also in Canon FD B/L mount) lenses.

The amazingly good native primes for m43 have almost ruined the alt lens hobby for me.

It's really hard to justify using alternatives to the 12mm f2, the 25mm f1.4, the 45mm f1.8, the 60mm f2.8 macro, and the 75mm f1.8.

On m43, It's still worth using alts that are long and fast (e.g., 135mm f2.8, 180mm f2.8, etc.), have a special look, or just so beautifully constructed that it's a joy to take pictures with them.

Thank goodness we still have Canon, NEX and upcoming FF NEX to enjoy our alt lenses on!

Anyway ... to answer your question ... there are tons of really great alt lenses that work well on m43 in the 35 to 70mm range ... but four inexpensive ones that are easy to find and give great results are the:
Olympus OM 50mm f1.4
Pentax 50mm f1.7 ("Pentax-M" model)
Contax Yashica 50mm f1.7
Canon FD 50mm f1.4

Good luck!
