Every once in a while I get bored with the ordinary and decide to do something completely different. That is what my motivation was when I mounted my 800mm the other day at the Oceanside Marine Nature Study Area on Long Island, New York. Finger Licking, the egret I’ve been featuring is an old friend and this wild egret has sired most of the great egrets that frequent this preserve. He knows the naturalists that frequent the park and allow them to get very close. As we have come to know each other quite well, he now lets me get as close as them and this is how I was able to get to minimum focus distance for my Vivitar Series I 800mm mirror lens. The mirror lens allows me to get a very different look than my higher cost optics and I wanted this change. I hope you enjoy this study of patterns, texture, and shades.

All: D200 + 800mm cat @ ISO 400, 1/1600, f8, fill flash (SB910 + Better Beamer)
I used all sorts of tricks in ACR and Photoshop to bring out the feather detail.
Comments and suggestions welcome,
