p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A journey in feathers

Every once in a while I get bored with the ordinary and decide to do something completely different. That is what my motivation was when I mounted my 800mm the other day at the Oceanside Marine Nature Study Area on Long Island, New York. Finger Licking, the egret I’ve been featuring is an old friend and this wild egret has sired most of the great egrets that frequent this preserve. He knows the naturalists that frequent the park and allow them to get very close. As we have come to know each other quite well, he now lets me get as close as them and this is how I was able to get to minimum focus distance for my Vivitar Series I 800mm mirror lens. The mirror lens allows me to get a very different look than my higher cost optics and I wanted this change. I hope you enjoy this study of patterns, texture, and shades.

All: D200 + 800mm cat @ ISO 400, 1/1600, f8, fill flash (SB910 + Better Beamer)

I used all sorts of tricks in ACR and Photoshop to bring out the feather detail.

Comments and suggestions welcome,

Morris

AND you picked white...not the easiest to get detail....but not surprised at all by the results you get. The disembodied head of the egret is weird (you might want to clone out that bright spot on the left.)

Thank you Eric,

I've made the change. I put that head there as it is a great way to kick people out of dream land. By the way, the neck is in the background.

Boredom is good, Morris. Like 1 and 2 but would mess around with some dodge and burn. Always benefit form your posts.

These are stunning images, Morris. Real wowsers!
Vivitar Series-1 lens? I didn't know they made an 800 mirror lens.
For more than 30 years I've used their smaller zooms (24-70mm and 70-210mm). I found them to be very good lenses for the price. All my Galapagos Island images were shot with them- without tripod.

What a wonderful way to approach things Morris, good for you! I'll have to say this is an interesting set and I did enjoy getting lost in these shots.

Thank you Charlie,

When one opens there eyes to the third party lenses, they get the opportunity to find some real gems.

Thank you Tim,

It's a whole different take on wildlife photography that few explore. It is a lot of fun when you can do it and very rewarding

Nicely done Morris!

A different and close-up flavor and I like the study.
