p.1 #1 · Camera for Night Dungeon Style Stadium Lights for Soccer

Sorry for the long Title, and I am sure this has been talked to over and over and over again. I just lost one of my 1DMKII bodies. Error 99 and never came back alive. No power and if it does power up, 1 press of shutter and camera shuts off till hours later. So, I am now looking to get another body, so that I can shoot both my 400 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 without having to switch over and over. I have some money put aside and debating on a MKIII or MKIV? My daughter will be playing High School Soccer and the games will carry over to evening. The field lights STINK big time. With my MKII and 400 wide open, at H ISO, I was getting 200 SS. So put the gear away and watched my daughter play. Maybe that is what I should do, but want to capture her High School Games. My question? The MKIII or the IV? or stay shooting day only and get another II or IIN. Thanks and apologize for asking this never ending question

Do you need the additional reach of an APS-H sensor?

Ben, yeah the 1DX would be great. But there is a small issue of $$$$. If I get the IV, I will be pushing my budget.

pispeak. What is APS-H Sensor. sorry to sound dumb on this one

I was also thinking. will need it for indoor volleyball gyms at high ISO

Canon have had 3 sensor sizes

APS-C = 1.6 crop used in the consumer stuff (eg 7D to rebels)
APS-H = 1.3 crop used in the 1D series before the 1Dx
Full Frame . Used in 1Ds 1Dx and 5D & 6D

if the 1dx is out of budget then the next choice on Hi Iso alone is the 6D

in fact on Hi ISO performance its basicly

1Dx - 6D - 5D3 - 1D4 - 5D2 - 1D3 - 1Ds3

but then sticking performance and usability in (AF & FPS etc) its more like

1Dx 1D4 5D3 1D3 6D 5D2 1ds3

OK

what is you minimum shutter speed you require?

if your using H on your Mk2 (1600 pushed a stop to 3200) then a mk3 will go to 3200 and H (6400) so that will get you to 1/400th .
but a 1D4 goes to 12800 which is 1/800th before you start using the H settings

so newer stuff like the M4 - 5D3 and 1DX will allow you to get the shot in the first place ..

Of course you could always just watch the games

Ian, thanks for the explanation of the APS system. Never looked into the name of the crop factor. Now, in regards to "just watch the game" yeah that has not worked out very well. I do watch games. Say out of 5 games, I will shoot 2.5 and watch the other 2.5. I don't do much night action shots, but would love to be able to when needed. I can get an MK2 again, but rather would have a newer old one. I might as well just go to my full extent of budget and do the 4. If I remember correctly, the 3 and 4 have micro focus adjustments to help the lens, correct? Or just get 2 MK3's, since 90% of my shooting is day light. Or the 4 for my 400 and keep the 2 for my 70-200. What would you do? Thanks

yeah anything from a mk3 onwards has micro adjust .

not sure what id do in your shoes but im pretty sure it would involve either a mk4 or a 5D3 (assuming a 1dx is out ) .
