Sunday morning I visited the Oceanside Marine Nature Study Area on Long Island, New York. I walked all of the trails on the park and it was a very quiet day. I did take some flower and insect photos before calling it quits for the day. I packed my gear into the car and was about to depart when I spotted this great egret on the top of a sign. I decided to have some fun so I mounted my 800mm mirror lens on my camera and set up my tripod to support it. I then moved it as close as I could and discovered I was too close and had to back up to focus. He was watching me and I moved to get directly in front of him. When I got home I discovered he blinked when I was directly in front.

All: D200 + 800mm cat @ ISO 400, 1/1600, f8, fill flash (SB910)
Processing started in ACR with adjustments to contrast, saturation, and vibrance. Then I moved to Photoshop made a duplicate layer, applied a small liner burn, flattened and then adjusted levels and curves. Last I sharpened each image.
I had a ball taking these photos and spent about an hour working this tricky subject. From 4 feet there was not a lot of DOF to work with as I manually focused this powerful lens. I’ll be posting more from this shoot in the future.
Comments and suggestions welcome,
