p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Returning to DSLR world: is the D80 a decent used camera

I am on a very tight budget but I would like to get back into DSLR world. So I am looking for $200 or less used body. That's said I am considering D80 or D70. Leaning toward D80 just because is a bit newer and has SD cards (for which I have readers and actual cards). The body will be paired with 50mm or 35mm fixed focal lens and used occasionally when I feel like carrying bigger camera.

So are there any major cons for buying such an old body?

Thanks.

I have a D80 we use at my office. It's really not a bad camera if you can find one for a couple hundred bucks. ISO is bad - figure 400 max, but it is well built and has a nice feature set. My copy has been very reliable too - never a problem and I purchased it used a few years back.

No major cons - enjoy it. The D90 gained a sensor that performed substantially better at high ISO than the D80, but if you're looking for a cheap something to carry around and have fun with, I'd buy a D80 and a 35mm f/1.8 DX, and enjoy it.

Yep. D80's are not bad at all but i'd spend the extra $50 for a D90. I'm selling my D90 but if I could pick up another D90 in a couple of years, I would. D80/D90, they are great workhorses to have.

Get the D80/D90, put a 35 1.8G on it, and call it good. To this day, I feel somewhat remorseful for selling my 35 1.8G :/

I have used the D80 since the original issue date with no regrets. I am upgrading to the D7100 but plan on keeping the D80 to have in my truck at all times. It will AF on older AF lens and has the same sensor as the D200. I have found that 10.2mp is fine for printing 16x20 canvas of wildlife I display at the office.

D80 is more like 170$ and D90 is 350$. I got my D80 a thousand years ago for 1200$ new... After getting through more than 4 other camera's as primary, my end result is the D80 with an added zero . And I must say, the D80 still makes some amazing images in well-lit environments! CCD tech is still very good.

my first dslr was a D90, I loved it, as most have...during my research the D70 came up as more desirable than the D80, don't remember why but should be easy to research...but yeah, D90 can't go wrong

d70s is far more useful than d80 for the flash sync which can go to 1/8000 without the lame FP modes.

d70s can natively sync 1/500 and using cheap ebay triggers ive gotten 1/1000

Unfortunately, the D90 is way above my budget so I have to stick with D80 or anything that's cheaper than $200 (for body alone). D70 looks good and even with only 6 megapixels, it would be good for me but I am put off by the CF cards. Somehow I do not feel like investing in new cards and readers. Plus none of my computers have built in CF slots (only SD). Flash photography is not my main concern but I will give the D70 another look since it is so recommended here.

Well, I have not tried a D80 but I do use a D70s, that I got for around $100 on Craigslist. I still use it, I keep it ready and charged in a handy spot so it actually gets used pretty often.

Anyway having "only" 6mp has taught me to frame better since I know I can't crop. I got an 8gb CF card for $11 that holds a ton of RAW files. I did have a card reader laying around but add another $10 off Newegg for that I suppose.

I guess my point is that I wouldn't shy away from the 6mp cameras.

Dd80 is poor at high ISO and lousy at long exposures. If you aren't doing these the D80 is a great camera.

I had a d80 (my first DSLR.) It's a decent camera and should do what you want for the money. I would pick it over the d70

I will put in another vote for the D70s. It is a nice feature set and is cheap these days.
You get:
- Unlimited flash sync (because of the electronic shutter).
- Wireless CLS support with built in flash (sure it's only channel but still).
- Decent ISO 1600 if shot in RAW.

And best of all, it's easily under $200.

How is the D70 with high ISO and longer exposures? Does it do better than D80? They both have CCD sensors and D80 has similar sensor to D200 that's why I thought it would be better than D70.

If I could get D70S for $100 I would definitely buy it as it would leave me some funds for cards and readers. Unfortunately, quick check on local CL shows that the D70 cameras are priced close to $200. For that amount, I rather go with newer D80.

D80 is a very nice camera. If you want to save a little more money, the D70s would be a good way to go.

The only reason to choose the D70 over the D80 really would be if you were going to do a bunch of high speed flash sync shooting. Myself, I have the D70, D80, all of them... but if I had to go back and choose between the D70 and D80 I would go with the D80, it has a better sensor than the D70... plain and simple.

I have had them both, and have to agree with Jim. The images at 400 ISO from the D80 are much better than the D70s.

My mistake, I missed that you wanted a body under$200. Yes, prices for a D90 is still in the $300-$350 range. The D80 is still a pretty great camera for what it is. Definitely a great buy for a beginner also. Using the D80 in daylight, it will produce some very decent shots for what it is
