p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Moose Couple

I visited the White Mountains in New Hampshire for the past three days. The weather was stormy and rainy, but I managed a few short day hikes. Early this morning I drove to a remote location that is perfect moose habitat. It was hazy with an intermittent light drizzle. I saw some movement within the shadows of the forest and spotted a young adult male and what I presume was his female mate. Or, vice versa if you prefer! It's mating time for moose in the Northeastern USA. The male was closer and sized me up for about five seconds, then both trotted off. I moved parallel to the direction they had moved and saw the female standing in a small clearing. I couldn't see the male, but I suspect he was close by. She stood for a couple of minutes before moving deeper into the forest. All shots handheld.

Good looking shots, especially with that slow shutter on the second one...nice job staying with them too.

Nicely done Brian. You have steady hands to get sharp results @ 1/40th sec ~ Ron

Thank you, Ron. I was pleasantly surprised because I only got 3 quick shots of the male. The newer generation of image stabilization on this particular lens helped greatly because I don't always have rock-steady form.

Very nice work Brian. Seeing these guys in their dense habitat really helps to illustrate how hard it is to get clean shots of them and how hard it is for them to get around. Well done!

Thank you. I took these in a fairly flat section of forest just off the Kancamagus Highway (north side) in the area of Church Ponds.

I'm not an expert on Moose, but I thought the reddish coloring might be blood residue left from his shedding the antlers' soft, velvet-like covering. I do know that the covering provides blood and nutrients to the antlers and when regularly shed reveals the boney antler structure. Just a guess....
