Zombie DSLR ... I like it.

Yes, it would. A D610 at this time makes no sense what-so-ever. The D600 is a fin camera ... and it would likely be called a D600s anyway. Nikon Rumors has everyone thinking a D610.

Perhaps the long awaited D400 is going to be FX and Nikon wants to put some capability and price spaced between it and the D600 by putting out a higher priced and slightly higher spec'd D610 . . .

maybe the D610 is the D400 replacement - with FX sensor that has enough DX resolution to satisfy the D400 fanclub, but in a body more pro than the old D600. The Expeed processor should fly like in a D4 if the DX crop is 16MP and all the AF dots will be inside the DX crop. I just can't see how in 2013 Nikon would release a high priced DX body, and they certainly can't move the clock back on the FX price decrease just by making the D600 disappear.

Personally, I am already drooling over the opportunity to pick up a blow-out priced D600

That would be a D810.

My personal prediction, which I've had for a couple years now, is that DX is going mirrorless soon, thus Nikon is hesitant to put out a "pro" DX DSLR and any more significant DX glass. High pixel count FX models like the D800 already have DX reach via crop or and can achieve higher frame rates via DX mode. Thom seems to have similar lines of thought.

I'd love to see the D600 (w/o the oil) or D4 sensor in a D800 body.

I'd also like to live in a $2 million dollar home and drive a Porsche, both of which seem more likely than the first option.

well, then you want my D600. It doesn't have "oil" - 5500 frame old, 304xxxxx serial number, 4 times cleaned since I bought it and the last time I did it there were two dust specs following 1500 exposures in backcountry conditions, nothing that really needed a wet cleaning. But I do that now anyway - I lost my fear of cleaning, thanks to the small spatter on the AA filter following the early exposures when it was below 3000 frames.

Let those D600 prices tumble - I am keeping mine and want a second one. However, when I checked Nikon's outlet and Adorama today, nothing had changed, even with the news that the D600 has been taken "off the Nikon roadmap"

It's not the D600 sensor that's associated with the oil - it's the mechanics of the D600 shutter system (apparently since Nikon is replacing the shutters when D600s are going in for other maintenance).

I love the ergonomics of the D800, but would love the D600 sensor (and better live view) in the D800 body.

I say hold on to your D600s Nothing special here...

http://nikonrumors.com/2013/09/19/first-set-of-nikon-d610-specifications-the-same-as-the-d600.aspx/

I am thinking of getting one of those selling here for $1200 as a back up for my D800, it's never been this cheap to own such a capable body...

If NR is correct, then I just got a new D610 when they replaced my shutter mechanism last week!

Bummer if the 39-pt AF won't get the same 51-pt AF that the D7100 has. I would really love the quiet shutter that the D600 has. But "focus, recompose" doesn't work well w/ f/1.4 glass.

What's interesting is that 2 almost-identical bodies, the D7k and D600, had the same problem. Based on what I've read, the D7100 doesn't seem to have it. So apparently it can be fixed- I guess.

mine doesn't have that issue. I don't even have dust on my sensor I even change my lenses sometimes with the body pointed up lol

Maybe they just want to change the name because D600 is associated with sensor dust/oil issues (that they don't want to admit). Not that I have any issue with my D600, but I can see how rolling over a new model that sells better would be an easier way out for Nikon than a recall.

I cleaned the sensor once on my D600 early on, and it's probably due again (almost a year later). No worries.

If they truly only fix whatever the QC issue was, then that's a huge admission statement they screwed up, whereas if they upgrade a few things like AF, max ss and flash sync they can say "We listen to our customers and gave them what they asked for" in an attermpt to save face, of course nobody would believe it, but if they did those things that would be everything I want in a dSLR

They may just stick the D800 trouble-free shutter in the D600, thus bumping the max speed to 1/8000 second and call it a D610.

That would be disappointing if that's the only major change they made.

- John

EDIT - for me to change out my D800 for a D610 it would have to have:
- Same AF points as D800
- 1/8000 sec shutter speed

The differentiation between the D800 and D610 would be external controls, build quality, CF slot, 36MP (plus a few more) which seems reasonable for the price difference.

Right now Nikon Rumors (FWIW) is reporting no specification changes, but something substantial has to change to call it a D610 . . .

Well, I'd want a D700-D800-ish body, too. But those 4 things would be enough to make me consider selling my D700s.

All reports are that the D600 issues have been fixed in the more recent batches. In fact I checked out tanapode's recently-acquired used D600 for him while he was at my house and it looked to be extremely dust/oil/splotch free (I guess the previous owner could have just cleaned it though).

They should of just called it the D600s

It would of made retailers a lot more happy. It would add some confusion, but in the end both products would be sold.
