If Nikon is indeed releasing a D610, wouldn't that just add the D600 to the list of zombie dSLR that Nikon already have on the shelves? The D90, D3100, D5100 and D7000, which are superseded, are still "in stock" everywhere.

If the D610 is just a D600 with an improved shutter sub-assembly, wouldn't Nikon be better off just announcing a product recall?

Also, Thom Hogan, and a few FM'er have mentioned that Nikon is replacing D600 shutters when they are sent in for other reasons (eg "clean and check"). Doesn't that imply a bigger problem with the D600 than just dust and oil on the sensor?

Shouldn't everyone with a D600 send it in for a new shutter?

The shutter obviously is the culprit. But Nikon have until today not really acknowledged a design issue with the D600, and I doubt they will do that if they introduce a D610. From what I read, that could be related to legal issues they want to avoid.

IMO, they will therefore probably not only substitute the shutter (and so enable 1/8000sec and 1/250sec X synch) but add all the goodies the little sister D7100 got half a year ago. Most importantly the 51 point AF system, but also details like the 1 button 100% review.

Another reason for such a very fast upgrade after just 1 year could of course be the imminent wave of new FX cameras Sony seems about to release. The (usually very well informed) Sony rumors site says, no less than 3 FX Sony cameras are coming within the next 5 months. Of course, Nikon would have a hard time competing against those with a D600 that meanwhile has such a bad reputation.

Nikon lately seems to be on the "the user is screwing things up" moto lately. Nikon has chosen to stay quite with both the D600 oil issue, and the D800 focus issue. If I wasn't heavily vested in Nikon already, I'd be tempted to switch brands.

And who would you switch to?

Most of my Photographic problems have been "User Error".
I had many dissappointments with my 5D2 (what I consider Canon's best camera at the time)
it way under performed it's specs for shooting anything except Landscapes in full manual.
Canon seems to be having equal service problems and Sony lacks glass.

I had no problems with any of my D1-4, D200, D90, D3100, D5100, D7000, D7100, D600 or D800
so I will stick with Nikon.

Yes, I have read some bad press about Nikon's service lately, thus the reason for this post:
http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1240785/0#11803261

They may have not come out publicly to say the D600 has an issue, but with replacing the shutter mechanism without asking would indicate (to me anyway) that they do indeed know there's a problem.

1/8000 second shutter, 1/250 max flash sync, 51-pt AF w/ a quiet shutter would tempt me to sell my 2 x D700. Of course, this would be 6 months after the D610, or D600s, whatever it'd be called, would be released for reasons I've mentioned in another thread. As a wedding photographer, the quiet shutter that the D600 inherited from the D7k was a tremendous advantage.

IMO, they will therefore probably not only substitute the shutter (and so enable 1/8000sec and 1/250sec X synch) but add all the goodies the little sister D7100 got half a year ago. Most importantly the 51 point AF system, but also details like the 1 button 100% review.

This is the most troubling item. I can understand that mistakes are made. Admitting to them would enhance Nikon's credibility. But Sendei doesn't seem to see it that way.

And please add to the list: removal of the blurring filter, just like on the D7100.
In that case I'm in for a D610.
I don't want a blurring filter in front of my sensor.

Yes, clearly Nikon wants to avoid being held responsible for the problems that they have created. A more contemptible approach to their customers is harder to imagine.

A D610 would entail more than a new shutter or other mechanical parts.

I should think so. My guess is that one of the changes we'll see is the removal of the AA filter. And hopefully they will increase top shutter speed to 8000. Even if they make these two things happen I don't think it would be enough for me to upgrade. But I learned a LONG time ago to never say never.

Hopefully, they will improve the live view AF so that it is like the Canon 70D.
Also the ability to change settings while still in live view as opposed to how it is now..
Nikon are you listening!!!

NikonRumors says that the D600 has been taken off the Nikon road map and to expect prices drops in the next few days.

Well, at least I can still buy a D90 to get something newer than my D700's.

This is infuriating. I guess we're just out of luck.

Out of luck for what?

The D600 is still an awesome camera for the money, and if the price drops on it as they clear inventory. Well, so much the better.

Depending on the features that are added/changed/upgraded I might just sell my D800 . . . I don't need those 36MP and I might just like the slightly better DR that the D6XX has instead.

We'll see . . .

Wonder what the price will be?

I am still not convinced a d610 will replace the d600. It's too soon especially when the d300s is in dire need for a replacement 2 years ago!
But I'll play along with this rumour. The only reason why Nikon cannot just offer a recall for the d600 issue is perhaps the problem lies within the fundamental mechanical designs of the camera. Meaning, they just can't simply retrofit a proper shutter mechanism. Therefore it makes better sense to come out with a totally new model.

However if the d600 is only 1 year old doesn't that mean the d610 was already in prototype mode last year already? That's like smartphone cycle!

My recommendation to Nikon right now is to FIX YOUR CUSTOMER SERVICE!
