Built in the old walled city of Delhi during the 17th century- by Shah Jahan (Taj Mahal in Agra).
It became the Shah's capital- and continued to be the capital for ruling emperors until the British conquered India in the mid-1800s.
A huge, walled palace, the name comes from the red sandstone used in its construction.
