From the Don McLean song. I thought it was fitting since they just found that new Van Gogh painting.

Hi James...

Boy, does this evoke some memories.

This song was popular when I returned to the U.S. from a Navy tour of duty in the Philippines in the early 70's during the Vietnam era. I can remember listening to it on vinyl and on the radio. It is a beautiful, yet haunting song in tribute to a troubled artist.

Your depiction of "Sunflowers" is also a beautiful tribute to both the singer and the painter.

Great work.
Tom

Thank you Tom. I was worried some people would not remember the song. I did an opposite/sad version of Van Gogh's "Sunflowers" stil life. In mine the flowers are wilting, and the background is dark - even the vase is concave and translucent. Just a few days earlier I spent an session shooting the live flowers, and they drank all their water over night resulting in the wilted look. It, and the recent discovery in the news of a new Van Gogh painting from the "Sunflower period" is what inspired this photo. Here are the lyrics to McLean's great tribute song...

"Vincent"

Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul

Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free

They would not listen, they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue

Colors changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free

They would not listen, they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left in sight
On that starry, starry night

You took your life, as lovers often do
But I could've told you Vincent
This world was never meant for
One as beautiful as you

Starry, starry night
Portraits hung in empty halls
Frame-less heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget

Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free

They would not listen, they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will

Nice image. Captures the song and the theme very well.
Good job.

Dying sunflowers are so much better than when at their peak, for this challenge, especially when coupled with the lyrics of Vincent.
Beatifully lit, and the background is perfect for the shot.

Wow, quite moody. The fallen petals work very nicely. Lovely light, and coposition.
