p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · How to remove a radio collar from a big cat(+2added)

So a few of the jaguars of the Pantanal have been collared and are followed by Panthera (I think) by radio telemetry. We did not have the advantage of using that technology to find the cats and in fact their is debate whether they are useful or in fact detrimental. So, I figured a way to remove the collars
From the safety of my computer without using sedative darts I gently de-collared this big boy. You can see the difficulty in photographing these big cats...there is only a small window of opportunity to get shots as it moves from one area of dense foliage to another with a small break, albeit with vines obstructing the view, allowing for decent shooting.

2 looks like more like sans cat [edit] this wasn't appearing at home, it is at work [/edit] Nice job on the collar removal, he looks a lot better without it.

The first shot is a fantastic example of what you have worked with in getting your jag shots. It aint easy!!!! And it's a testament to your skill and dedication that you do get such great shots.

3 is marvelous

Eric, these animals look big! And powerful!

I guess cat radio collars are somewhat analogous to bird banding, and I often wonder if information from banding/tracking is being utilized to it's full potential. In any case, great images, and an appetizer for me! (T-2)

Wonderful set, Eric.
Even though I knew better- in the back of my mind I once thought jaguars were pretty much like the western hemisphere's version of leopards.
But your fine images tell otherwise; these are big, super-powerful and very sturdy felines. They don't need to climb trees; there is nothing in their natural world the adults have to fear. Even big anacondas and caimans would likely avoid adult jaguars if given half a chance.

Eric.

I have found that if you approach them carefully and scratch behind their ears, they will let you do anything you want.
I have removed many tracking collars this way.

Seriously. Nice job. I really like these bigs cat photos.

A fine job of editing Eric. Some tagging protocols have been decidedly detrimental for some species. For some reason a study on penguins comes to mind. Cheers!

Nice work here Eric,

I think you did a really good job removing the collars from these images.

What a superb animal the jaguar is, terrific that you got to see these creatures in the wild and thanks for sharing the experience through your photo's!

Paul.

Your kind words are very much appreciated Tim! I'm happy to see you have time at work at look at FM...I'm sure your boss had no idea....till now

Greg...you must be off today Have an amazing trip and come back with some cracking images. You will, no doubt, have the opportunity to see these guys lounging on the river banks, something that was impossible a few months ago with higher water levels. (That a bit of sunlight will make you shots something quite special I suspect).
Collaring is controversial at best, and certainly, photographically, an eyesore. I wasn't happy that that was my first experience. I was worried all my photos would have cats with collars...but fortunately, he was the only one.
