A massive shift in the earth's crust collapsed some areas and thrust others into the air.
Plus there was the extreme shaking and liquifaction. And in some areas a huge tsunami swept over the land.
The coastal town of Seward suffered them all.
Some of the dead trees still stand as testimonial to the quake.
The slide scan didn't go particularly well- but this image gives a modest indication of what happened.
The shot was taken about 30 years after the quake.

Excellent composition! Being a structural engineer, I have a lot of appreciation for the '64 quake.

Interesting photo.
I recall being there in college (seward) and I think 4th street was the first street against the shore. kinda spooky.

Thanks Slab, Scott, DG, Kee and AMaji.
Among the greatest damage to towns was because so many of them were built on glacial silt.
The violent and sustained shaking liquified the silt and it either collapsed or slid, taking buildings with it.
