p.1 #1 · remembering Rosie (Yellowstone)

Rosie was a black bear in Yellowstone that regularly brought her two cubs out along Tower Road several years ago. She was a favorite, drew huge crowds (much to the irritation of the rangers), and showed up pretty much every day.

"Want to see a wolf!??" he asked, every excited, from his car window as he drove slowly by us. "Just down the road!" he said as he drove away. So we took the bait and found this coyote in his nice winter coat.

Nice shot. You know, I wonder if some sows have figured out that it is potentially safer to have the cubs near people - some bears (boars) don't like people and/or crowds. And that in turn would make it safer for the cubs. I've seen this happen in Jasper (black bear), Waterton (black bear), Yellowstone and in The Tetons with some of the grizzlies. Or that theory could be complete BS and the sow just like the easy pickings near the roadway. Who knows. Either way, Rosie was indeed somethings else.

Nice shot of the coyote in winter and thanks for the background on Rosie. I wonder if this is the same white coyote that caused so much excitement when I was I Yellowstone in the spring, a year ago. Zillions of people were eagerly on the look out for the famous white wolf in Hayden Valley, and when they saw the white coyote barely visible as it moved through the sagebrush, there was a huge traffic jam as photographers abandoned their cars in the roadway--rapture style. This, also, did not make the rangers happy.

Very nice, Keith! Background on the bears would benefit from a bit more NR (and/or less sharpening), but the subjects are great!

Thank you all for the comments.

Plinian - I agree about the bear background....will take care of that.
hnillson - Interesting idea -- sometimes hanging around people makes the safest place to be in a predator-filled environment.

Thanks for looking!
