p.1 #1 · Usefulness of Blue Gold(Yellow) Filter

I am considering a Singh Ray Blue Gold polarizer and wanted to ask for thoughts from others on these filters. I understand that if I want a polarizer effect, this is something I can't do in post processing. But what about the Blue/Gold (yellow) effect? Is this something that can be easily done on Photoshop or does the filter do a better job of it?

Thanks!

No, I don't think the effect can be easily done with PS.

But it's Not THAT useful.

The above 2 are test shots taken in the middle of the day in Morocco, you can imagine the position of the sun... it's just high in the sky. You can see... it won't turn bad photos into good one but it can make some of my desert shots with a golden look.

I have others which were taken in early morning. But they are not in my Flickr, maybe I can show you later.

Tim Fitzharris has always been a proponent of these. Check out his work.

usefulness is relative to the owner and his/her abilities and imagination

Seems to me it'd be one of those 'use it a few times and regret having dropped $250 on it' vs. getting a std. polarizer.

Another set, taken in early morning, but that was a bad weather and the sky was dull and grey without the B/G polarizer.

It's late here, I will try to find some desert shots with it later...

yes, pretty much that...

A colleague found that reversing a standard CPL seems to give similar effect, but I haven't really took pictures to compare the 2.

the results look similar to what NASA is getting of the Martian atmosphere from their rovers (ie. if our sky wasn't blue)

I've considered getting one, but the price has always held me back. Darwin Wiggett does some nice work with one. It's worth a visit to his site if you are interested in getting one. Alex Johnson uses one to separate his color images for black and white conversion. I think you have to sign up to see the videos. Watch the Duluth Harbor Tutorial here:

I have had mixed results with it ...
Here are some of mine that weren't terrible:

But - I really don't think its very useful for color photography - the results are just too artificial. If you use it moderately it could add color to a dull scene though. Part of my problem is with 'gold' part - its more like 'light brown' - so water turns to sewer output

They are fun, but tricky to use well. I had one and enjoyed using, but have long since lost it somewhere.

On a whim I purchased one before my TN trip. In my experimentation I may have over used the effect a bit, but here are some shots SOOC for the most part (5D)

It's recommended to adjust the WB and pull some magenta out of the images. I left it in auto WB and didn't see it as necessary to adjust in post. Maybe if I print them I'll PP the images a bit. You be the judge if it's desirable. I like the effect but I'm learning where/when to use it.
