The critters labeled harbor seals are actually Steller sea lions  The tattoo/brand is used for research survey purposes (population counts/migration habits/haulout preferences, etc.) and is large to enable visibility from a distance (even from aerial surveys).
And yeah, your fin sighting is pretty exciting and unique/rare. I've been living in Southeast AK for 16 years and spend a lot of time on the water and have only seen one fin. Congrats!

I appreciate the clarification on the seals. I got the names backwards. I thought the smaller, lighter colored ones were the Stellers. I will correct that now.
I wish I would have had a good capture, but the blow spout from the Fin Whale was super impressive. It was a huge plume/spray of water. Everyone was hoping the animal would have turned towards us, but instead went away. Rather quickly I might add.
