Peter, It seems that you havent posted images like some of these before, so the lens must be offering something unique to itself. Looks like a keeper for this reason alone.

Any update on the handholding ease/ difficulty?

Peter, your close-up shooting is wonderful, love the cat for dinner image! Seems this great white striped zoom just might fit the bill for ya Looking forward to the rest of your adventures, review and images, that looks like one fine piece of Canon glass.

Zooming while BIFing, who woulda thunk it

Db, I am satisfied with the lens, and it meets all of my expectations, in fact, its AF performance exceeds my expectations. The handholding difficulty is somewhere between 500 II and 400 II.....the lower lens diameter as well as the low profile foot make the sidewise lens swings OK to control.

Glad you like those Jerry, the zoom is very nice up to 560mm. Beyond that I'd use it only if there is nothing else available. No doubt 200-400L can play with them big white boys.

Nice IQ, and good AF response and precision too. Here is a wood pijun on which I've tested both....just one sample out of many taken with the lens so far.

Servo AF placed on the bird's eye, miniscule DoF, about 60% crop.
Handheld 1DX + 200-400L @ 560mm and f/5.6, 1/500 sec, ISO 3200 (NR done using "Neat image").

I've been waiting for images done with this lens, in the hands of capable photographers, demonstrating how this lens can produce fine feather detail. Finally, a sample from you mitesh and the Woodie from Peter. I was concerned the 200-400 didn't have it and from these images the 200-400L certainly does have it.

Well done!

Thank you, Mitesh and Morley.

Here is another bird portrait in keeping with the FIB theme.
Handheld 1DX + 200-400L @ 400mm and f/6.3.

I can manhandle the 500 II with relative ease and the 400 II only with a bit more difficulty. Ergo, your experience implies that I should certainly be able manage the brute. Hmmmm!!

BTW. It seems that you are handholding BOTH the camera and the Birds. And you seem to have short arms.

That's a good one.
I'll tell you this: if ole Arthur can allegedly handhold 200-400L, then you should be able to do so with ease.

Thanks. And how flexible is the 200-400 below 200 And the IQ and AF at 100mm

Another answer for you, eh?

For you that might be important.

For others being able to engage TC with the flick of a switch, 1 stop advantage (on the long end) and prime like IQ with versatility of zoom along with improved AF and IS count toward flexibility.

If you said the statement "The 100-400 is even more versatile than the 200-400 for me" then no one can argue.

But making a blanket statement makes you sound foolish. Oh yeah, you said the statement needs a , but are now trying to justify it.

That I can sort of attest to, having been with one of Arthur Morris' groups earlier this year. We did very little BIF's - mostly BOG's (Birds on Ground).

I rented a 200-400mm and I just started looking at some images.

1DX 200-400 at 560mm hand held 1/2000 f8 ISO 400 CROPED to about 1:1

I like the lens..........

Oh foolish me, I should have said more versatile for me and most other photographers. Which is why in the next year the 100-400 will outsell the 200-400 by 1,000 to 1 or more. I wonder why Certainly can't be because it is more versatile. A 200-400 that most people can't afford does not make it very versatile.

Patrick, that's a beautiful image!
Whites against a dark background, exposure is fantastic and feather detail is spot on

I feel sorry for that fish. Do you see the facial expression on her face? The fear, the anxiety? The feeling that in a split-moment, she will become a victim to the digestive juices of that big birds' stomach? Nature expressing its own cruelty in its own ways...

(ps: a is implied )

Markle you keep drilling and drilling and there is no oil to be found. Constantly taking issue with something or the other, if it's not 7D, then it is 100-400, or god knows what else.

Give it up, man, can't you tell that most of us here are not too keen to get involved in that sort of gear bickering ?

What a silly conversation. Boys please, how about we celebrate the images, the photographers that can master such amazing tools, and through their efforts; prose and experiences, gain some insight/knowledge to further our art.

It's becoming clear Canon has created another magnificent, wonderful zoom. It's at the top of it's class and in a lens type 'the zoom' which is versatile, has great utility, by nature. And, it's only the fool that would argue such.

It could be a Rebel with a 75-300, a 40D/7D with a 100-400L or 1DX with a 200-400L...does it really matter what's in hand as long as we're enjoying the experience, creating images that bring a smile. How about remembering where we started in this art, how wonderful the journey and just revel in our own art, as well as those that manage with bigger guns.

Be happy in the fact that you can shoot, have the gift of a photographic eye and the means to afford any of these marvelous tools to indulge your passion!

English is my first language, and if it is not affordable for someone, it is not even usable for them, so how could it be versatile for them?

Versatile: adjective: able to adapt or be adapted to many different functions or activities
