This was shot with handheld 1DX + 200-400L @ 300mm.

I could have perhaps gotten a better shot with 500 f/4 or 400 f/2.8 primes, however, the risk of flawed captures would have been higher than at 300mm FL where I had a pretty good leeway vis a vis framing and AF, although I ended up having to crop more.

All in all, the strength of the zoom played a role here in that I could choose an optimum FL for a relatively low risk capture, and yet not lose too much detail/IQ.
I guess, that's where I am finding the sweet spot of 200-400L: FL optimisation from one moment to another, which is obvious for any zoom, yet it is nice when such utility is demonstrated in practice, particularly for someone like myself who has been shooting long primes almost exclusively..

Great picture! I haven't been able to get a decent great blue pijun action shot yet . . but you inspire me to keep trying.

I've been using mine for football and soccer so far and have greatly increased the number of well-framed shots. I hardly feel the need to carry a second body with shorter lens for close up action.
Given the likely audience here, I have also used it for a shot of a great blue pijun and a couple of great water pijuns (Cormorants).

Amazing. Who would have thought zooms were more versatile than primes

The 100-400 is even more versatile than the 200-400: lighter, smaller, more manoeuvrable, and a fraction of the cost.

Now if I could only learn to zoom back to 300mm when I get too close.

Oops, sometimes a 300 prime is too much. Should have had my 100-400.

Acoll, those are well framed, sharp shots of diverse pijuns.....the benefit of the 1DX + 200-400L shows.

Thank you, Morley. Unfortunately, the bird soon flew into a canopied section of the area, and then I've lost control over just about everything photographically: mostly exposure was off by at least one and a half stops (the shooting was done in manual exposure mode), and the background was so intrusive/busy that only 300/400 f/2.8 wide open would have saved the day. Clearly, having the right FL of 300mm is not everything.

Here's such fairly extensively photoshopped shot for illustration: the lens as well as the camera did their job fine, it is the operator who hasn't adjusted camera settings to the change in environmental conditions.

Handheld 1DX + 200-400L @ 300mm.

Peter:

I really like the background and the little bit of light framing his head. You certainly can get a sense of the enviroment where these guys are looking at your capture. Proper exposure would be a challenge.

Very nice Peter.

It's Canuck vs Canuck in the annual 2013 zoom wars. In the left corner we have Tony "100-400 rules them all" Markle and in the right corner we have Peter "There's not a supertele I met, I could resist" umm what's his last name?

Blood will be split folkes, so grab some front row seats for the biggest show in town

Hey, in a pinch I will use a 400 DO. Could not have got this shot with a 300 f2.8, 400 f2.8, 500 f4, or a 200-400, because they are all too bloody (pardon the Aussie slang) heavy for me.

The best lens is the one that the photographer has the best ability to use.

Erm, these are 2 quite different lenses. The 200-400L is versatile in ways the 100-400L isn't. To you perhaps it might be more versatile but this is not the case for everyone.

Nice shot, but I disagree about the 300 as it's eminently handholdable for extended periods for bif shots and mk II is supposedly even better with better balance.
