p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Dam Osprey

Have not been to this spot in a while, it was very busy with herons and egerts, and a few eagles early in the year. Now it seems like the osprey are running the spot. Saw probably 5 or 6 in the air one time, at a good distance. Been working on getting more then just the sky in my flight photos.

Lots of photos but I tried to give a good variety or different background and activity.

after taking these photos, even with a 1.4x converter it seems like most of the places I shoot locally I need to be even closer, then I think about a 600mm, and In Nikon its 10+lbs, too much weight, and the canon is 8.6lbs, the same as my Nikon 500 vr that is hand holdable for me.. also the d800 is great for cropping, but 4fps misses some osprey diving shots, and even AF is kinda hunting sometimes with the 1.4 converter, which stays on a lot. man, I love the controls of Nikon, never used a canon, but a 5d mk iii and 600mm II, is really sparking my interest.

its really just the little things, yet, IMO, if Nikon made a version 2 that was similar in weight to the canons, which im sure they will, then I would still need to buy that, and sell my 500.

ehh, I know the d800 isn't great for wildlife other then cropablity, which is great, speed usually isn't too much of a concern for me most of the time. although more FPS would be great. the biggest thing is metering inconsistency and autofocus speed sometimes, and loosing autofocus on fast moving birds.

1) one photos I was really happy to get. was lucky to have a low angle at the time.

2) doing the hover, looking for a fish

3) got a catfish and coming right at me...(well not really, it was cropped even at 700mm.)

4) closer up with the catfish

5) a dive

6) with the catfish again

7) another hover

8) flight shot

9) a very heavy crop, I just wish he did this closer to me.

10) Thanks for looking....

#1 is a fantastic job! Sure love the water level perspective and the energy of the osprey is pretty evident.

Great job and thanks for sharing.

yes, #1 was a shot I have never got before, and the happy with lighting, tones and angle of it, as well as the water splash, and it was not too heavy of a crop.

but then again I never got a photo of on osprey grabbing a fish right out of the water and heading towards me, too bad those where cropped too much for good quality.

im going to add these 2 GBH just cause, I thought the second one was funny and the first I liked the background.

they where also shot the same day. I actually think this was the heron that ran off on osprey off a branch.

how many channels can he get?

Btw that GBH behavior. Is somewhat common.....I've been told its to shade the chicks but I have my doubts as this time of yr the chicks are gone
