Cool pics Norm, especially at night through glass.

We have fruit bats (1m wingspan!) and micro bats here, the fruit bats fly over the city at dusk leaving for the feeding grounds in the rainforest in their hundreds. A spectacular sight.

They come to our trees (figs, paw paw, palm trees) in the garden but their approach is to crash land into the tree and climb around to the fruit from there ! Noisy buggers too squabbling over food.

the flying fox! Seem many of them in the Philippines., with a few thousand images.

Nice shots, Norm; I don't think I've seen bats photographed this way before. It would be interesting to know more about their normal eating behavior; is the feeder a mimic, or an opportunity!

Greg

Greg, There are a couple species of these nectar feeding bats. They winter in Mexico and come north and spend some time breeding then back to Mexico to winter. When we have droughts and their normal nectar producing plants fail they resort to humming bird feeders on the way back south. I have forgotten the species but I think one is Mexican Long nosed, Ill check that later.

Thanks Paul,
I don't get a chance with them very often. They only come into my place every 2 or 3 years.

Thanks Tim, I have seen some photos of this species feeding on Saguaro cactus blooms, agave and other plants as well as hummingbird feeders. If you want to see how far photographers will go for a picture, check this website:

At a local Birder shop in Tucson.
But Check:

It looks like the same design It is great, easy to clean and keeps bee, wasps, and and ants out.

So cool, Norm. I've heard Tucson gets the best hummingbirds at the end of the summer, but this guy is so cool too.

Thanks Nancy, I prefer the hummingbirds in the Spring when more males are in breeding plumage.
