p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Hairy Hummingbirds

Every few years parts of Tucson hummingbird lover's sugar bill skyrockets. I tend to tolerate the nectar feeding bats, I do like to photograph them. Last night 3 or more of them were busy draining my feeder. I have my security camera trained on the feeder. I watch tv and when they start feeding I go into action (if you consider holding a camera up against a window pane action).
I focus on the feeder and just watch when a bat is at the feeder. I have found that my porch lite doesn't bother them nor does the flash. Needles to say, I have many misses for every good shot.

The first is the winner Norm. You might want to try stopping down a bit to get more DOF and try one in the air without the feeder in view

Nice shots, Norm; I don't think I've seen bats photographed this way before. It would be interesting to know more about their normal eating behavior; is the feeder a mimic, or an opportunity!

Wow! what a hummer! Great capture.
At my house on the mountain, there are bats and of course hummers. I will have to watch out for these creatures!

Greg these bats normally feed on Agave and similar plants on the way back to Mexico were they winter. Because of our drought conditions Agave flowers in the wild are not too abundant. So, they hit town looking for hummer feeders. This doesn't happen every year.
It makes for some fun shooting. Last night I turned my security video camera on and when they showed up I was ready for them with my Canon with a wide angle lens. Lots of fun and I'm glad I wasn't shooting film.

Thanks Morris, Try one without the feeder I'll leave that to you. They are soooooo fast and erratic in flight, the only time they pause for about a second is when they dip into the feeder. The only way I know of to get inflight shots is with an electronic beam that when broken triggers the flash.

Cool pics Norm, especially at night through glass.

We have fruit bats (1m wingspan!) and micro bats here, the fruit bats fly over the city at dusk leaving for the feeding grounds in the rainforest in their hundreds. A spectacular sight.

They come to our trees (figs, paw paw, palm trees) in the garden but their approach is to crash land into the tree and climb around to the fruit from there ! Noisy buggers too squabbling over food.
