This was a great light for shooting f/4 or faster lenses, but less than ideal for an f/8 combo such as 200-400L with two 1.4xTCs engaged. However, we can tell a good setup by its low light performance.

Handheld 1DX + 200-400L @ 400mm + 1.4xTC internal + 1.4xTC III (external).
f/11, ISO 3200, no NR.

Thanks Peter, so what were your impressions of AF speed etc with both TCs engaged?

Also I was wondering if at some point you could test if the FOV of the 2 1.4TCs is actually the same as just having the 2.0TC external on without the internal engaged. The exif reports 784mm but I think two 1.4s is actually 800mm. 1.4 is a rounded number from the square root of 2. Just curious, would be meaningless in actual use

Peter...Sharp, sharp, sharp...ouch

When you post images from your Mark II teles; bare, the one area that shines most is feather detail. The above image is sharp, but the finer detail is not as super sharp, still fantastic, but there is a difference...at least to these eyes.

That looks like one heck of a multi-purpose lens...200mm to near 800mm with decent IQ...wow!
Wish I could grab one...but I probably couldn't lift one anyway; safely

What this proves ? Well the 200-400 is an E-T lens, the 1Dx is an E-T camera and PetKal is an Alien !
Bravo man !

Thanks PetKal for your offer. Please, be assure my congratulations were sincere (I know my English is a bit hmmm "old", I'm sorry for that).
I'm still astonished looking at your results. And your last sample remind me some days ago, with my 35/1.4 L, not being able to have sharp shots handheld at 1/30 s. Sure it was after a 12-hours-outdoor-shooting and I did not sleep the night before. But even with a simple 135L, or a 70-200/4 when IS is disabled, I have problems to aim the target without moving around (I can see me shaking through the viewfinder !).

No, my goal is not to mimic you. You're unique and I'm unique ! I enjoy my 1Dx every time I use it, but as a landscaper I can't imagine carrying a 200-400 for several hours (although I may grab a 300/2.8 in the future to catch the flowers in my garden !)

Anyway, I'm sorry to have bother you, and congrats again for what you've done.
Have a nice week-end
Larate

Thank you, bruder Mark. As I understand that you are looking into getting 200-400L, then you might like to see more shots taken with the lens.
Handheld 1DX + 200-400L @ 400mm, internal TC engaged + external 1.4xTC MkIII.

So Peter, great shots, any impressions on AF speed with both engaged? Have you tried out the 1120mm option yet?

Peter, the last two images...GBH's? Having not seen many GBH's I've not seen them with 'short' necks, I'm guessing it's tucked into their bodies/chest?

On a tech note, did you shoot these last two images 'wide' open, I ask as there seems to be a slight loss in DOF for the 2nd shot...could just be the angle or positioning of body/legs?

Jerry, that is a much smaller cousin: Green heron, the size of a small chicken with a very long neck.

Most of those shots were done at f/9.

I like the way you playing the light, Peter. It's more artistic sense than just a snap shot that metered and AFed from a best cam computer. You have shown that magic to all cams & lenses you have touched

Peter,

How are your Biceps holding out?

I presume your pocket book is doing fine.

Fantastic Peter You can see the loss of fine detail with the 2 x TC's in place, but it's still good enough for display at this size (get it while it's hot ).

Thank you Stu.
The apparent loss of detail is mostly due to very narrow DoF. Therefore, some parts of the bird are OoF.

You can see how that works with the combo, once we do a 100% crop......AF placement is obviously on the eye, and I try to do those at f/11 to f/13.
