p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Budget 300/2.8's on Canons

What are the good options for budget (say, under $1K) 300/2.8's that are actually usable at f/2.8?

1. Is the Canon 300/2.8L FD surgically convertible to EF for full frame use?
2. Has anyone tested the Canon 300/2.8L FD on EOS-M, NEX, or other mirrorless (obviously, no need of surgical conversion here) to see whether it can still uphold its reputation with the smaller pixel pitch?
3. Has anyone done a side-by-side on any format of Tamron 300/2.8, Canon FD 300/2.8, Nikkor 300/2.8?
4. Any other noteworthy budget alt 300/2.8's?

Thanks!

I have the Nikon AI and Canon FDL. I'll shoot some side-by-sides of the two on an NEX-7 this weekend for you, but, yeah, the Canon has no problem with dense sensor of the 7.

I haven't used the 300/2.8L, but I'd imagine it'll absolutely kill on a mirrorless system. I haven't had any issues with pixel density on most FD lenses...even the cheapo 200/2.8 IF is very sharp. My 50-300/4.5L works beautifully on both m4/3 and Fuji X, and the 300/2.8L is better than that, so I'd imagine you'll get some seriously good image quality out of that lens on a mirrorless camera.

The Tamron SP 300/2.8, which was made in an AF version for Canon EF, is pretty good. It doesn't have the spectral correction of the L lens, but otherwise, very nice. It's quite sharp with gorgeous bokeh. Only downside is a tendency for purple fringing and a relatively pokey AF motor. I used it to shoot golf with the 1Ds II.

Some samples from the Tamron 300/2.8 on 1Ds II:

And some from the FD 50-300/4.5L on an OM-D (just as a sample of an FD L lens on mirrorless:

If you have time, that would be really awesome. Thanks!

1. Canon FD 300mm 2.8 don't actually need to be surgically converted to EOS mount, now that there is "Edmika" 0.5mm FD-EOS adapter available on the market.

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/EdMika-0-5mm-FD-EOS-adapter-for-200mm-300mm-400mm-500mm-600mm-800mm-Canon-EF-/181085398867?pt=US_Lens_Adapters_Mounts_Tubes&hash=item2a2987e753&_uhb=1

Although reaching infinity focus isn't as straight forward as on adapting Nikon or Tamron, Canon FD will reach infinity with infinity calibration, as shown by Ed in this video:

2: Never tried the combination

3: I have once seen scanned 300mm 2.8 shoot-out article from one photography magazine back in MF days floating around on the web, let me see if I can find it again.

4. Although it might be bit over your budget, I think Sigma 120-300mm non-OS version is worth a mention. Ones in well-used condition seem to be selling around $1000-1200 range, but you will gain ability to change focal length, autofocus, and in-camera aperture control which you won't have from lenses you mentioned earlier. Obviously, it won't be as sharp as primes wide open, but it certainly isn't the slouch either.
