Between Portland and Yellowstone- the Interstate bi-passes Idaho's magnificent lava flows.
So take old US 20 going east from Boise, or going west from Idaho Falls.
And visit this magnificent national monument.

That is so cool... almost like the rings of a tree trunk.

Craters of the Moon is a very interesting location. So much diversity in such a small space. We hiked and camped there last year and really enjoyed it. Thanks, Charlie, for bringing back some good memories.

Indeed that is just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many flows of diverse types it is fascinating to drive that route and see. Even the drive up to Hailey, ID. on 93 reveals some amazing flows. All part of the extended caldera at Yellowstone Lake. Geology is an amazing thing.....

Thanks AMaji, Ear and Trav.
"Tip of the iceberg." I love the intentional humor there- since lava is born of fire .
I agree about the fascination of geology.
To me, one of the most profound discoveries of all time was the theory and fact of plate tectonics (continental drift). And it has been discovered within the last couple of generations!
Plate tectonics explains the birth of Hawaii, volcanoes, lava flows, and the building of mountain ranges; the world's climates, where different types of plants can grow, where different kinds of animals can live.
Virtually every aspect of the natural world is strongly connected to the movement of continental plates: Mt Everest is explained; so is Death Valley; and the continuous lava flows from Yellowstone to Craters of the Moon and beyond.
Geology is cool stuff- no matter how hot it is .
Charlie
