p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Elinchrom Quadra A Head Flash duration problem?

Hi I was wondering if someone can help me out

I am having trouble freezing water splashes/spills with the Quadra A heads.

I am shooting in a studio environment so no ambient light is in the exposure.

I am using the B Channel on full power which should give the fastest flash duration of 1/6000 @ t.5

Camera settings were 1/250 @ f16...

When shooting the pours the stream of water gradually gets less sharp, I guess as it picks up speed due to gravity. I was expecting that this system should have no problem freezing a basic water pour?

Does anyone know if flash tubes slow down with age? As mine are pretty old so I was wondering if that might be the problem?

Or am I just expecting to much

Thanks in advance

A basic water pour is actually very challenging for flash duration, especially as you increase the magnification (higher subject speed across the frame).

t.5 times of 1/6000 actually equates to t.1 times of around 1/2000 second, which is more of an accurate estimation of what the equivalent shutter speed would be in ambient light.

The Quadra is fast, but not quite fast enough for this kind of shooting. Most people doing water droplet/splash photography use either small speedlights or Einsteins (or crazy expensive Broncolor gear). I don't think your flash tube is getting slower with age.

Thanks Sheldon

I was aware that the t.1 value was around 1/2000sec, I thought that would be enough..

Sounds like I was wrong and I'm asking to much from my lights

Luckily I do have 2x 600ex's, but I was hoping to make use of the Quadra's
