p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Indoor Volleyball & Basketball - C&C on WB and Exposure

Hello all, haven't posted photos much but try to stay active and always lurking.. this is my second year shooting Team, Individual and Action for a local school and I wanted to get some C&C on some action in the gym. That is where the majority of my frustration is..

Overall, feel like I am not able to get the "pop" that I would normally get. D300s w/ 70-200 2.8, 50 1.8 and 24 2.8. Feel like I am pushing the older D300s, ISO ranges from 1600-3200 at 1/640 to 1/800. Is the lack of "pop" a byproduct of the gym and uniforms in that there is no much color/contrast to work with? WB is fun so any C&C regarding whether these come across warm/cool would be nice as well along with exposure.

1 is your best shot, but not great
2,3 the ball needs to be closer to the player. You have that awkward ball on the ground shot in 2 and the shot doesn't really tell me a story.
3 looks like you were close to the timing but it's just off. Try to shoot / crop tighter. The player to the right really doesn't add to the photo.
4 looks like you were trying to show the player palming the ball. Just like in other sports back shots are not normally good story tellers. Try to get their eyes and shoot tighter.

All of these were with the 50 1.8, try that 70-200.

Personally I'd say work on getting the action right, over and over, then fine tune the settings / WB. Obviously if you can get stronger at both at the same time you will progress faster, but for now work on peak action.

Good start. Keep plugging away!!!

Thanks jspytek, I had one shot from the 70-200 ready to post but ended up not. For the same issues you noted. Shot from behind and not shot tight enough. I need to work on that for sure.

I picked some samples at random so these are not the best peak action examples but you did point out some things I havent heard yet which will be helpful on the basketball shots.

Thanks so much for the review.

Here are a few more for C&C on the action as well. These I thought the action was good so let me know if I need work.

For WB I'd say the last two appear much better on my screen, the first two seem pinker / little warm. As for the "pop" I have to believe uni colors play a role here, and black vs white uni's always will lead to feeling the pop is lacking more than colors. The last two seem fine to me. First shot's also seems fairly backlit (behind player's arm) which may play into things slightly...

Ain't poorly lit indoor gym sports fun??

IMO, the only way to get these to pop is by using some flash. I tried for 2 years, and couldn't get it figured out... Granted, I only tried it a few times before giving up.

Thanks, realizing the backlight might be from the angle, shooting up toward the lights maybe as opposed to horizontal. Indoor sports is certainly a challenge!

I have strobes and tried those last season but couldnt sync past 1/400 with the current triggers. I may try some PW's to see what result I might be able to get.

Thanks

In my opinion: You need strobes. Lighting conditions that you are up against are not going to allow you to get satisfactory pics without them..

It looks like the WB is pretty close, you are getting a bit of color cast from the floor.

In your first set, image 4 is a carry, and not an image you want to keep/show. Know your sports!

If you are getting above 1/500 at ISO 3200, you are doing pretty good. I would take that all day...

Thanks all. Yeah I thought the same when the play happened but it wasnt called and resulted in a point for that team.
