Still doesn't do it for me. I'm still upset that when they were updated they weren't without the IS, wider aperture and in the $400's. It's a shame because these are important lenses for an amateur crop user like me. To each his own I guess.

I completely agree. One of the reasons the Nikon system is so attractive, is the 35 1.8. Its $150 and it rocks the house. Where is the Canon response to this lens?

I don't get your complaint.

I see from your profile that you own the 28mm f/1.8, which sells at B&H (and other places) for $449. That is for a lens considered to have marginal IQ, and no IS. This new trio is totally redesigned, getting high marks for construction and IQ, plus they offer IS for only about $100 more than the 28/1.8. Seems like a slam dunk for consumers!

I'm guessing if Canon used offshore manufacturing they could easily sell the EF 35 2.0 at a similar price for the budget market. I've owned my share of budget optics--including a Nikkor 35 F2.0 AIS, E series 35 2.8 and EF 35 2.0--and am now ready to run with the big dawgs! As a offer Nikon shooter, I can say most of their offerings are really pricy and don't really make up for a handful of budget optics.

Still not that rich and wish the EW-72 for the EF 35 2.0 IS USM wasn't freakin' $54. I wonder if another wide angle EW or ES series hood will fit?

The fact that I own that lens sort of proves my point. Especialley since I am aware that its quality is sub par. It is one of my few options with f1.8 in that focal length. The 35 f2 was another option among a couple others (a little too long for what I wanted and slightly slower). Based on the options, I am kind of stuck with it. Hence, I would love for that lens to be updated so I could own one with good optics.

Edit: Also, I only paid $300 for my 28mm f1.8. A prime in that focal length that isn't of L quality, shouldn't be over $500 in my opinion. The price-aperture ratio is one of the main reason I began shooting with primes. Then later on I learned to love them for their ability to make me think about framing more.

A very mixed bag. The prices for the EF-S zooms are good and the new EF primes too.
That pricing seems pretty solid, decent prices for good stuff.

OTOH they sure as heck took away with the other hand ugh:

But they actually bumped the 70-300L up another $200 and still don't include the tripod ring! Man that is pricey now. And they bumped the 70-200 f/4 IS up $200 also, quite surprising, that was supposed to be the 'affordable' L tele-zoom with IS. The 70-300L even started with the new high pricing scheme and now they are taking it even beyond that! (Man just 5 years ago you could get a 70-200 f/4 IS from a reliable store, US model, for $950 and now the best is $1350!! Good grief up 42% in just half a decade!! Inflation sure has not been that bad and we have a poor economy.)

Much worse the 24mm TSE II is now $400 more than it was at the lowest priced reliable store last fall!! And $200 more than pre-Labor Day weekend. They raised that one the night before some Canon centers had tax free weekend, apparently it wasn't a scam to simply avoid tax free weekend but it's now locked in (maybe as a universal scam to beat the upcoming rebates? maybe this time they figure we will raise prices some weeks ahead of the rebates to fend off criticism of increasing prices the night before rebates?). What once could be had from a reliable store for $1800 at the best ever and $1900 for some time and even $2000 the other day is now $2200 yikes.

The 70-300 pricing will look better when compared to a potential new 100-400 in the $3000-$3500 range.

You know, after re-reading TDP's review of the 18-135 STM, I'm really looking forward to an 18-200 STM. It would make a perfect walkaround/video companion for a 70D or 7D II, I'd think. After shooting a good bit of video with my 24-105 and 70-300 non-L, I could really go for a lens that does the equivalent of 28-300 with ~8 P-MP at DxO, which well exceeds the 2MP needed for 1080p video.

In other news, the 24/2.8 IS is pretty hawt for APS-C handheld video, but it's definitely too wide for most FF uses, if you have only one lens. The 35/2 IS would be awesome for FF video, as would an accompanying 50/1.8 IS.

yeah I was thinking that maybe they were jsut trying to make the new 100-400 price not look so bad

at least the 70-200 f.4 IS and 70-300L and 24 TSE II are best in class lenses

Other lenses went up in price as well. The TS-E 17mm is now $2,500.

This is quite true (but you lose 1.3 stop compared to 28/1.8), but for 35/2 it doesn't look so simple...

Maybe Canon is repricing their lenses based on relative production cost instead of perceived demand.

I snapped up the 35 f2 IS. I plan on replacing my (still excellent) old 35 f2 and 50 1.4 with this lens. For $599, it seem priced correctly and won't be an expensive upgrade with my selling other gear.

The IS is a bonus, but I am mainly interested in the lens for sharper corners, and full time manual focus.

Lots of trigger pullin' 'n snapping up of the 35 2.0 IS! Mine arrives tomorrow! My 24-105 L used to best my 35 2.0 for hand held shutter speed so I'm excited about finally having IS on a fast prime.

Put me down in the "now they're fairly priced" column. At $850, I could decide between the 35/2 IS, Sigma 35, or a used 35L. And all three seemed expensive, so I did nothing. At $600 for the 35 IS, which is the one I wanted anyway, the decision was much easier, so I bought one. Looking forward to it.

I just got my 35 2.0 IS but, of course, it's late at night and I can't put it through its paces. I can say, in dim light, the AF is much faster and more surefooted on my 5D2 than my 35 2.0 and 50 1.2L. It feels really solid and well made. Also the front element is much larger than the older 35 2.0. No wonder it needs a 67mm filter.

I tried all the bayonet type hoods I own and none fit it. My old EW-73B (for the 17-85 IS USM) twists on and locks with the cutout in the correct position. No vignette. The barrel groove is slightly too small--1mm--resulting in a very loose fit. Too bad as at $18 it could have been a perfect substitute for the $54 EW-72.
