If you had to choose just one of the following two similar shots..... which one would you choose and why?

I choose the first because it is more comfortable visually scanning horizontally than vertically.

They are both excellent.
Not a far question: they create different statements.
OK, but I will still play.
#1. Why? Tighter comp. I prefer trying to absorb or move around in the busyness of the first. Second seems more like bringing the eye down to the subject, not as much being immersed in it.
Totally subjective.

I like #1 because it has more of the dark rock that adds contrast and interest. And +1 on more comfortably scanning horizontally than vertically.

+1 @ 1st one
vertical is a tough gig (although I like doing it) ... viewing distance will be a bit more important, I think
+1 @ move around vs. lead, arrive and stop
DR/contrast a bit more.
The log? adds another point of interest and leads us back into the frame @ move around.

I can see #2 nicely adorning the wall of a staircase.

Given the time zone difference, I'm unlikely to be an early responder. That said, the first is more visually interesting, although the log is a detraction to my eyes.

That's mostly why I asked Bob.... I like that crop as well, but don't want to inundate my site with a lot of the same image..... figuring that most folks would like the horizontal, I just had to ask.... Sorry Pode... I didn't expect everybody to respond so quickly....

5 points to you and Bob for responding.... everybody wins!!! lol

Thanks for the opinions.

The first. The horizontal aspect of it is not only easier to scan visually but, perhaps because our vision lends itself to a wider horizontal than vertical peripheral axis, draws the viewer in to the frame much more powerfully.

It's a tough question to answer...for me it would depend on what kind of wall I were hanging it.

While horizontal viewing, especially on a computer monitor, #1 is more comfortable...I still prefer #2. I like how it flows with the water and I find it has more depth and feels like a larger scale by having the higher portions of the waterfall included.
