Carrying wood on your back- for a lifetime.
From places where the trees haven't all been cut down.
And those distances get further and further as the years pass.
But what other fuel is so available in Nepal?

Good question, Douglas. I don't know.
My guess is that back then (30 years ago) they did not.
Do they now? My guess is probably not.
Note: My guess is based on the harsh reality that economically deprived countries and their citizens are struggling just to survive. A struggle so difficult that most Americans can't even imagine.
Such programs as reforestation, pollution control, a functioning infrastructure, welfare programs for the destitute, medical care for the masses, etc. cost a great deal of money.
And where would the money come from?
Shucks- except for tourism- I have no idea of what Nepal's economy is. And I'm pretty sure none of the tourist income makes its way down the caste system "ladder" to the lower classes.
The affluent members of the upper castes in those countries pretty much run everything, and they have hundreds of years of history and tradition of NOT spending their money on the lower castes.

And even though I've traveled to such countries- my knowledge of all the considerations involved is very limited.
I observe things as honestly as I can, and I come to tentative conclusions slowly.
But even then- as a middle-class American- I realize that I'll never have a really good understanding of those countries, their societies and cultures. And their problems.
