Loved this lens when I had it. I usually closed mine down 1/3rd of a stop down from wide open. I found that my center IQ improved decently that way. Here are three of my favorites taken with this lens.

So this may be a stupid question... How do people feel about using IS on this lens while on a tripod? I presume this would be a bad idea for long exposures since the IS could create movement while the shutter is open. But if I'm shooting 1/100s exposures, for example, could the IS help reduce movement from the wind?

Not a stupid question. The manual clearly states to turn off IS when used on a tripod.
Sometimes I get confused which of my lenses have IS that works on a tripod. Mostly the newer ones.

I've had mine since 2005. Used it with the D rebel, 20D, 40D, 7D, and 5dMKII. I take it with me when I hike and shoot primarily mammals, some perched birds when they're tolerant or land in front of me. I'll sometimes use it on a monopod, tripod with IS off when something is happening in front of me. I've got an old thread on here somewhere of an owl with the 2xTC that I thought was okay though some others didn't feel the same. I've never sent it in for cleaning (no dust pump for me) and I've never MA'd it. A touch soft wide open but pretty good at f6.3 (where I leave it most of the time.) My favorite lens due to the fact I can compose from cover if necessary and it's so easy to handle. Also great for shooting from inside the car when you've got those roadside opportunities. For my longer, more photo dedicated hikes, I take along the 400DO with the 1.4xTC to give me the Canon 100-560mm/f5.6 zoom package.

You didn't say you wanted samples but this is one of my most impressive ones. It's a tight crop & from a sequence where they all are in focus just like this one. It's from about 120 feet & hand held on a 1D2n at f6.3 / 1/800 sec & that things going roughly 320 MPH / 500 KPH as per radar earlier in the event.

And so everyone knows roughly how big it is here it is in the pits

wonderful lens, have used mine on a 50D 7D 1DIII and 5DII. I have found that it does not like filters such as UV for protection. I gave up filters ages ago and its been great ever since

my suggestions in order of priority are:
1) Microfocus adjust it at 400mm
2) use f8 if you have enough light
3) Get the 5diii - it will breath new life into the lens and permit 1.4x

I think this lens is the best dollar for value available. The trite saying is that the best camera (lens) is the one you have with you. And the 100-400 is light enough to be with you.
