The Pin-tailed Whydah is a resident breeding bird in most of Africa south of the Sahara Desert but has managed to do quite well here in Southern California.

Neat bird Tim. #1 for me. I've not seen this bird previously. Are there lots of them throughout the south, or just pockets of them here and there?

Cool bird Tim. The female almost looks like a longer tailed sparrow.

I wish I knew for sure but they are more likely escapees

they are also parasitic nesters and lay they eggs in Nutmeg Mannikin nests, also
another non-native bird that is doing extremely well here.

Thanks not sure of quantity but I know they are frequently spotted here in So. CA
