p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · corrupted/unsupported files??

Hi all,

Went out today and shot a bunch of .cr2 files and when I came home and tried to upload them to LR5 they would not open. On the disk they look like any other .CR2 file yet I get the same error message in PS. I've never had this happen before so I have a few questions?

Are these files recoverable?

What caused the corruption?

Any precautions I need to take going forward?

Thanks!

PS - Shot with a 1DX onto a Lexar 1000x if that matters.

Are the original files still on the card?

What is the exact error message wording.

My money is on old, unsupported RAW codec on your machine. Old version of PS not supporting the new 1DX file.

In LR previews don't show during initial import and once imported error message reads:

"The file appears to be unsupported or damaged. (1)"

File name is: IMG_0760.CR2

I'm sure this is correct re: PS bc my version is old and I almost never use it.

I use LR almost exclusively and haven't had a problem with these files until now.

Just having a quick look on google and it seems it could be a bad card .
Now maybe it could be the card or the reader (or not at all)

Have you tried to copy them from the card to your PC before importing into LR?
Or
Have you tried connecting the camera to the PC and importing from there?

If its not a card issue have you tried some other software like DPP ?

Just thinking aloud

Just another thought which may help RE the older PS version as well .

Try the DNG tool that adobe provide for free .

Also if it is a card issue does the 1Dx offer the ability to copy images from 1 card to another ? If so maybe it will let you send the images to another card

Again just thinking aloud

It could be a combo of card and reader creating the corrupted file, I did have this happen to me with the new UDMA 7 cards and an old Lexar card reader.

Lexar replaced the reader in two days time.

Check with Lexar customer service, they are wonderful.

Otherwise try a rescue software (Lexar software comes with their card).

If you can view the files in the camera, its likely a card reader issue. Try importing one file from the camera. If that works, you have now found the issue.

I just had that issue with my 5Dm2. I put the card back into camera and it read all the files just fine. So I blamed my card reader - it ended up in trash can. Picked up new one. In a mean time I used camera to download photos from the card.

Don't panic unless your camera cannot read the card.

Uh, oh.....then it might be time to panic!

Camera was reading the card fine this afternoon but now I just get a big "?" when I reinsert the card to view the images. Haven't given up yet as I have rescue software scanning now. We'll see. Will also be calling Lexar tomorrow.

Thanks for all the suggestions thus far.

The files are stil there - sometimes bad card readers/improperly ejected / dismounted cards can get the Ike tree corrupted. Recovery software I'm sure will find them.

Yes! Right again. Thanks Jeremy and all the other responders to my questions.

For those interested I called Lexar this morning and as stated above they were great. I updated the firmware on my card reader and then ran Image Rescue 4. All the photos were rescued. (It was also interesting to see all the other photos that remained on the card even after it was formatted before using it last.) I then used IR4 to erase and reformat the card. I was told that that should solve the problem of the corrupted files. If not, Lexar will replace the card under warranty.

Good to know.

Did Lexar provide you the firmware to update the reader? I am wondering if my Lexar reader needs a firmware update. Which reader do you have?

You can dl the firmware update from the Lexar website.

I have this reader: http://www.amazon.com/Lexar-Dual-Reader-Professional-LRW307URBNA/dp/B007FEFQDA/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1377998713&sr=1-1&keywords=udma+7+card+reader

All good readers today can be firmware updated so always try that first.
