Most of my photography is landscape and nature subjects, but I would like to expand into some portrait photography. Last year we were in Kauai, and I wanted to shoot a subject in native dress at sunset (basically inspired by the cover of The Hot Shoe Diaries http://www.amazon.com/The-Hot-Shoe-Diaries-Flashes/dp/0321580141 ) . I attempted to recruit a subject by contacting hula schools on Kauai, hoping to find someone who would pose in return for a copy of the images, but got nowhere.
Next year we will be in Maui, and I am still thinking about that shot. The thought occurred to me that if I want to make it happen, maybe I should just hire a model. This is uncharted territory for me, and preliminary research quickly leads to "Model Mayhem Land", which is not my cup of tea, if you take my meaning.
So I thought I would get advice from those who know People Photography well, i.e. those on this forum.Does hiring a model seem reasonable? If yes, how would you proceed? Any pointers greatly appreciated.

Simplest way would be to contact a modeling agency in the area or see if there is an active photography club. Worse comes to worse you can find the local Craigslist or equivalent and post up a request.
