p.1 #1 · EOS 1D M3 vs M4

I am considering trading/selling my Mark 3 body and purchasing a used mark 4 body. I shoot high school sports It will cost me around $2,000.00. This has brobably been discussed before but can anyone give me any info? Would it be worth the upgrade? Anyone interested in a trade and cash?

Yes.

You are getting approx. $1000 for your 1D3.

The 1D4 is superior in almost every respect. Plus adds video.

Go for it!

1D III is a great camera no doubt and I still miss mine, but 1D IV is an improvement in many ways and the fact you have 60% more pixels while having even better noise is a huge bonus. For wildlife, especially birding the 1D IV allows for a lot more cropping which is the main reason I upgraded. LCD is big improvement as is the LV operation and you have video too now.

I'm still rocking a 1D3 and a 7D. I NEVER touch the 7D for sports, but it just has a more pleasing IQ to me in portraits and such...

What do you guys think about the new 70D as an upgrade to 1D3? This may have been discussed to death around here, I've been away... I know its not as tough, but if the AF is as good as they are claiming, could it be a step up? Especially with better ISO performance?

The AF improvements they have been talking about are only whilst in LV, not when looking through the VF. It's basically the same AF as the 7D minus the really important spot AF. If you do video the 70D will be a huge step up, otherwise no real difference, other than better IQ. I'd sell both 7D and 1D III and get the 1D IV.

That's exactly what I did, just over two years ago.

What Pixel and Jim said, selling 7D and 1D3 for 1D4 was a great move. The 1D4 is just so much better all around than the 1D3, go for it!

The 1D4 (which is really more of a 1D3 Mark II) is a great upgrade over the 1D3, except in one area. I call it a 1D3 Mark II just because they used the same body/ergos/battery/form between the two, and really just changed the software and hardware inside.

1) 16 mpx vs 10 mpx, and though that doesn't seem like a huge upgrade, it really is. This provides you much more flexibility in cropping and still retain large files.

2) AF is generally much better and crisper over the 1D3. However in low, low like (EV1/EV0), the 1D4 will have a much more difficult time acquiring focus in AI Servo on low contrast objects than the 1D3.

3) There is no AF stigma surrounding the 1D3.

4) High ISO performance is better by a stop or so.

It is a great all-around camera!

Poorly worded and while of course it had serious iisues, for most there were none. My 1D III was excellent for fast action work, better than my 1D II, better than my 7D and certainly not much different to my 1D IV.

I too had no problems with the AF on my 1D3. It beat the pants off my 7D.

no problems with auto focus on my 1DIII, the only issue I have with it is the megapixels and that its not a mark 4

The key in the OP's question is they shoot high school sports. While not specifically mentioned I'll wager this will include outdoor sports and under lights. Absolutely no contest, the MkIV beats the MkIII hands down. The IV's ability to handle higher ISO is desperately needed at almost every HS field as their lighting is usually quite poor.

Exactly what he said(above) and Teamspeed said.

Don't have a 1D III, but you will have to pry my 1D IV out of my cold dead hands. I still use it even though I have the 1D x available. I like the VF focus point illumination better on the 1D IV
