p.1 #7 · p.1 #7 · Beautiful girl. Which version though? (edit added) | |
Edited version (posted with permission of OP) for those intrested.
Things to note - this sh*t is all my personal opinion, and I'm sure many will disagree, but please put away your pitchforks because I've recieved a few PMs asking about editing so here it is. FWIW, OP did not ask for any help on this shot, it was just a good candidate.
- Original skin tone in OP eas too dark (Color info pulling nearly browns from the skin).
- Image has been oversharpened in all respects, presumably to give a more 'pop' type look to the shot.
- Original shot could have benefitted from a bit of reflected light on the subject; notably the lower face/chin where green tones start to dominate and darken the subject.
- Unfortunately this is a quick go (4:45) off of a .jpg, so clipping in the highs is likely, and the greens in the face tough to eliminate properly.

What's been done?
Firstly, a new layer is created; first for our brightness/contrast.
- levels are adjusted pushing the mids higher and boosting tones in the face.
- Adjust - Replace Color is used to even out skin color a bit.
- Adjust Color is performed on the greens to further fix this (would provide nicer results with RAW; same with pulling some red out of the hands).
- A new layer is again created off of this adjusted file. Entire layer is gaussian blurred around 1.0px or so (varies on file size - as this is a small file, only 1.0 is needed).
- Layer opacity is dropped to taste in this case, around 35%. My personal prefrence would be far less then this, but the sharpening was drastic on the sample file.
- crucial areas such as the eyes, lips, etc have their opacities further reduced manually to provide more 'pop' to the shot. Would probably add more detail to the hands, lower areas as well. Contrast can be burned into the lash area manually if so inclined.
Again, the RAW would support these edits far better; the BG for example wouldn't be pixeled out, and other fixes as mentioned could take place. Essentially, I hope this post helps others who are trying to achieve a certain look to their images but feel they are lacking in the PP department. Can do a more detailed walkthrough for those interested at some point.
