p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Casual Hiking Portraits...

Hi,

So my friend asked me to go take some pictures at her hiking spot, very casual on hiking wear and no make up or anything.

She is not a model, and these are some of my first portraits, and first time on location, so I don't have much experience, but I tried to get her comfortable for the camera.

We came up with these shots, any keepers?.

Thank you.

#6,8 and 11 for me. nice work. Perhaps next time you can instruct her a little to keep her chin down...and shoot from above instead of shooting up.

So usually for portraiture, you always want to be above eye level of the model?
Got it.

How about composition? am I on the right track?
Probably posing is way off, since this is my first time telling someone what to do and how to position, she was really nervous in front of the camera, but I tried to get her to relax.... but still I think we could have had better poses.

Thank you

Others hit the nail on the head. Shooting from eye level or above will be much more flattering, especially those who've experienced a few more years of gravity.

For composition, the best advice I can give is KISS - keep it simple stupid! - I mean this in the most lighthearted way possible - If elements of the background are not adding to the image - blown highlights, shrubs, rocks with graffiti, etc. - take a few steps and remove them from the frame. As a general rule, light subjects should be paired with dark backgrounds, and vice versa.
