That being said, I hope the new 55-250 STM has a good optical upgrade as opposed to just adding STM. Could be a great telephoto budget alternative for a lot of people, although a used 70-200 f/4 non-IS would still be my choice I'm guessing.

It's definitely an entirely new optical design since it switches to internal focusing. They also added a UD element. I don't know if the UD just compensates for going to internal focusing (assuming such a change even requires better glass, which it might not) or simply improves things. I bet it will perform very well optically. And be like an EF-S 'L' like the 17-55 and such.

Looks like Canon got the MTF for it up now and yeah it looks MUCH improved (other than wide open, 250mm, far mid frame where it is a bit worse, but central 50% and far edge and corners appear much better on the chart):

I could actually see upgrading my G10 for the G16. I wonder how the image quality is, but I suspect it has improved substantially. Being only 12 megapixels likely helps.

The 55-250 looks like a nice improvement. But since I got my existing one essentially for free, and only use as a light travel zoom or for my son, I don't see myself upgrading.

Wow just comparing the new 55-250 MTF to the 70-200 f/4 IS charts and it actually has better MTFs at the wide end! Other than for the deep corners. Granted 70mm f/4 is the one weak spot of the 70-200 f/4 IS (contrary to TDP results, photozone, most blogs, my own very careful tests and Canon's own MTF charts all suggest that the 70-300L and Tamron 70-300 VC should be sharper at 70mm f/4 than the 70-200 f/4 IS).

Even at the long end, and this is surprising, the MTF charts look a tiny bit better for it too for the center and center mid (the edges do appear to be worse).

This lens may really deliver and be the new 'hidden' L.

Of course it is a slower lens in terms of aperture, almost surely it has slower AF and it only works on APS-C.

They have a pretty impressive kit set with the 18-55 IS and 55-250 IS STM now, at least when it comes to sharpness.

C'mon Canon...how much does it cost to use a metal bayonet mount?

What could it possibly add to the cost of the lens? $10?

Yep, seems like it takes the same path as the EF budget telezooms took. There was 75-300 IS, then there came 70-300 IS with the UD element.

Sorry guys but the old no STM version had a UD as well

From the canon museum text on the first version
"The inclusion of a UD (ultra-low dispersion glass) element in the design provides excellent aberration correction, and ensures excellent image quality at all focal lengths"

Its not marked on the block diagram though .

Hmmm...missed one feature of the G16 that looks quite good, the zoom lens is f1.8-2.8, that is a fast bit of glass...not a trivial spec. No articulating LCD makes it less attractive than my G12, and pushes my thinking more to the EOS-M as an alternative...so the waiting continues

It is pretty fast for a P&S. How big is the sensor in that thing?

Small !Sensor size 1/1.7" (7.44 x 5.58 mm)
And the lens is the same speed as the g15

Am I the only one inordinately excited for this lens? Given that it'll end up being a kit lens, I bet that we'll be able to get it for ~$200 by the time that Black Friday rolls around.

I've got a 70-200 f/2.8L and given the (lab) sharpness and internal focusing plus STM, this seems like it would be the perfect compliment for when I don't want to carry around such a heavy zoom or need the pure shutter speed from f/2.8. Wish it had a metal mount, but that's about it.

Take a look at the Sony RX100/100II, much more interesting IMO (but also more money). It certainly is leagues ahead of my old G11!

I am hoping Canon will come out with an even more compact version of the 55-250 STM for the EOS-M that will have the build consistent with the other M lenses. Right now I have an original EF-S version that I keep with the EOS adapter on in my M kit in case I need some reach.

Yep I was wondering if the m2 and a couple of M lenses would be announced .
I can't believe the M was just a toe dip in the water and canon have put their shoes back on and walked off back up the beach .

Tech like the dual pixel sensor in the new 70D is just made for the M

hmm that is true, I wonder why the press release said they added a UD element

the Mark II already has the large third element UD

Well done for the diagrams Ski

For the non Japanese the colours are (as far as I can tell)

70-300L green = UD box=ISunit

70-200/4L green = UD, purple = fluorite (if its not purple then sorry I'm colourblind and have trouble in those colours)

55-250 STM . Museum does not have any info but you can see the green is marked as the UD . Box is the IS UNIT

55-250 mk2 . Green is marked as UD in the Japanese but on the camera museum its marked as 'aspherical' . But the text clearly states its got UD

70-300 non L green is UD

That looks really nice, except the max aperture looks like it changes a lot with the zoom. The sensor size looks much better though.
